Plot Summary

As the cameras roll on The Cleansing Hour, childhood friends Max and Drew stage yet another intricately planned episode of the show “Father Max,” during which they perform an exorcism on a supposedly possessed person. However, behind the scenes, each possession is nothing more than a cleverly devised act aimed at captivating their audience and driving them to engage on social media and buy merchandise. For Max, the pursuit of a larger following has grown into an all-consuming obsession, compelling him to continually push the limits of their show’s appeal.

Initially, Drew’s fiancée, Lane, supports their ruse and even steps in to play the role of the possessed individual when their scheduled actor fails to show. Yet, as the live stream begins, it quickly becomes clear that something has gone terribly wrong. Lane’s possession is alarmingly real, and the malevolent force wreaks havoc, picking off the crew members one by one. Left in a terrifying stand-off, Max and Drew must confront the grim reality of their situation.

As the stream unfolds, the demon forces both men to divulge their darkest secrets. Max starts by peeling back the curtain on their façade, confessing that the show is just a well-crafted illusion meant to entertain and deceive. However, as the broadcast continues, he reveals a haunting truth from his past that has tormented him for years. As children, both Max and Drew were students at a Catholic school, where they faced brutal punishments at the hands of a sadistic nun. In an especially harrowing moment, Max was driven to a drastic decision to protect Drew from further punishment, leading to the nun’s unexpected demise.

This traumatic incident left an everlasting impact on Max, causing him to abandon his priesthood out of disillusionment with the Church’s cover-ups of the abuse rampant within its walls. The Cleansing Hour emerged as a misguided attempt at redemption, fueled by Max’s desire to channel his pain through the cathartic act of exorcism. As Max stands before Lane, now fully possessed, he must confront not just the supernatural force within her, but also the shadows of his own haunted past.

As Drew’s online stream begins to attract unprecedented attention, he realizes that the sinister force behind the chaos is manipulating the platform for its own dark agenda. In a moment of clarity, Drew decides to cut off the live feed, at first thinking that the demon aims to embarrass the Catholic Church. However, further investigation of the demon’s ominous hints during the stream uncovers its true identity as Aamon, revealing access to critical insights regarding its modus operandi.

Equipped with this newfound information, Drew reconnects the feed, only for it to be overtaken by a devastating revelation: the intimate encounter between Max and Lane comes to light. This shocking disclosure threatens to derail their efforts to carry out an exorcism, but the rapidly climbing viewer count serves as a stark reminder of the urgency they face. Despite successfully exorcising the demon from Lane, this betrayal fractures their bond irreparably.

Their brief respite is interrupted as Aamon returns, disclosing a harrowing truth: the true puppet master has not been Aamon but Lucifer himself, who has orchestrated events to infiltrate the stream and possess the millions of viewers now tuning in—over 17 million, to be exact. As this possessed horde turns against those nearby, chaos erupts worldwide, targeting innocent victims, including the President of the United States and his own son.

As the credits roll, the audience is left with the haunting aftermath of Lucifer’s manipulation, a bleak reminder of the havoc that can ensue when society becomes complacent in its dependence on technology.
