Plot Summary

Robert McCall, portrayed by Denzel Washington, rises early every day to head to his job at Home Mart. Living with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, McCall meticulously times his every activity, whether it’s preparing for work or washing the dishes. He enjoys a respectable reputation among his peers, who remain oblivious to his hidden past. On this particular day, he shares lunch with his friend and co-worker Ralphie, played by Johnny Skourtis, whom McCall is actively encouraging to lose weight ahead of a security guard exam. After questioning Ralphie about his lunch choices, McCall discovers, much to his surprise, that Ralphie has snuck chips into his sandwich. He gently reminds him to focus on making progress, not achieving perfection.

Struggling with insomnia most nights, McCall frequently finds solace at a nearby 24/7 diner where he reads The Old Man and the Sea while sipping tea. During one visit, he encounters a young prostitute, Chloë Grace Moretz, who typically seeks his company. Curiously, she asks if the protagonist in his book has caught the fish yet, to which he responds that he has not. After finishing her dessert, the girl prepares to leave when she receives a call from her pimp, Slavi, played by David Meunier. He orders her to meet a client in a waiting limousine, which she hesitantly complies with, despite expressing her discomfort.

The following night, McCall encounters the same girl again at the diner, but this time, she sports a noticeable bruise. Concerned, he offers her a donut from work, and for the first time, she sits down to talk with him. Introducing herself as Teri (her real name is Alina), she hands McCall a CD of her singing, hoping for his feedback. Unbeknownst to them, they are soon interrupted by Slavi, who appears and physically assaults Alina. Though McCall contemplates intervening, Alina’s plea for him to stay out of it holds him back. When she is later hospitalized due to her injuries, McCall is heartbroken to see her condition and learns from another girl, Haley Bennett, that Slavi is a violent man who mistreats his girls.

Haunted by her deteriorating state, McCall decides to take matters into his own hands, using Slavi’s card to track him down at a local restaurant. When he offers $9,800 for Alina’s freedom, Slavi dismissively reveals that for him, her worth far exceeds that amount. Rather than leave, McCall steps into action, devising a rapid and brutal response that results in the deaths of Slavi and his men.

As investigations unfold, a Russian mobster named Marton Csokas takes on the task to discover who murdered Slavi. Meanwhile, despite the looming dangers, McCall assists Ralphie in facing a series of corrupt cops. He intimidates them into returning stolen funds, further showcasing his moral compass amidst the chaos unfolding around him.

McCall’s seasoned past is revealed when former associates Bill Pullman and Melissa Leo lend their expertise, helping him understand the Russian mafia’s connections and the repercussions of his actions. After learning that Teddy, also known as Nicolai, is hunting him down for revenge, McCall decides to confront his adversaries while protecting those he cares about.

McCall’s stealthy tactics and meticulous planning lead him to trap Teddy and his henchmen at Home Mart, where he fights back against their threats and ultimately defeats them. When the dust settles, McCall tracks down the Russian mafia leader, Vladimir Pushkin, in Russia and enacts his justice.

Returning to Boston, McCall finds a semblance of peace but realizes his purpose has transformed. He is approached by Alina, who, now on the mend, expresses her gratitude for his actions and reveals her newfound determination to build a better life for herself. As McCall settles back into his daily routine, he devises a way to help others in distress, signaling a new chapter in his life when he receives a message seeking assistance, replying simply, “Yes.”
