Plot Summary

Thorin Oakenshield and his band of Dwarves are on the run from Azog and his vicious Orc faction. Guided by Gandalf, they make their way to the home of Beorn, a skin-changer capable of transforming into a bear. That night, Azog receives a summons from the Necromancer to gather his forces for an impending war, and in turn, he instructs his son Bolg to hunt down Thorin.

After Beorn shares alarming tales about the treacherous Mirkwood and the dangers posed by the Necromancer’s ominous rise, he leads the company to the outskirts of the enchanted forest. It is here that Gandalf discovers traces of the Black Speech inscribed on an ancient ruin, motivating him to delve deeper into the haunting history of the Nazgûl as previously prompted by Galadriel. Before departing, he admonishes the group to stay on the designated path.

Lost in the labyrinthine forest, the Dwarves fall prey to giant spiders. Fortunately, Bilbo utilizes his ring of invisibility to rescue his companions but is faced with the shadowy allure of its power when he inadvertently drops it and violently dispatches a spider to reclaim it.

Assisted by the Wood-elves led by Tauriel and Legolas, the spiders are vanquished, but the Dwarves are captured and brought before King Thranduil. Thorin confronts the king regarding his prior indifference towards the Dwarves of Erebor following Smaug’s devastating attack six decades earlier, resulting in their imprisonment alongside the others. However, Bilbo avoids capture and cleverly orchestrates their escape using empty wine barrels, floating them down the river.

The company finds themselves hunted by both the Wood-elves and Bolg’s Orc brigade, resulting in an epic three-way confrontation. As they navigate the tumultuous waters, the Dwarves manage to escape, though Kíli suffers a grave injury from a Morgul arrow. In response to threats of an assembling dark army in the south, Thranduil seals his kingdom, while Tauriel opts to accompany the Dwarves, prompting Legolas to follow her.

Meanwhile, Gandalf](/actor/ian-mckellen) and Radagast investigate the Nazgûl’s tombs, discovering them strangely empty. Gandalf soon realizes that the Nine have been summoned to Dol Guldur and concludes that Sauron’s resurgence is imminent.

The company is clandestinely transported into Esgaroth by a bargeman named Bard. Thorin offers the Master of Laketown a promise of treasure from the mountain, resulting in an armament provision for their journey. Kíli remains behind due to his injury, cared for by Fíli, Óin, and Bofur. When Bilbo discovers the hidden entrance of the Lonely Mountain, he ventures inside to find the Arkenstone, but inadvertently awakens the fearsome Smaug, who is aware of the Dwarves’ intentions and Sauron’s return.

In Laketown, it is revealed that Bard is a descendant of the last king of Dale, holding the last black arrow capable of slaying Smaug. As Bard tries to reach the siege launcher with the arrow, he faces arrest from the Master, who instructs his son to protect the weapon. Bolg and his Orc unit infiltrate the town, only to be stopped by Tauriel and Legolas, who swiftly defeat them.

Meanwhile, Gandalf](/actor/ian-mckellen) bravely infiltrates Dol Guldur alone, sending [adagast to alert Galadriel about the revelations regarding the tombs. Within the fortress, he manages to save Thrain before the pair are ambushed by Azog. In a heart-wrenching confrontation, Gandalf is overpowered by the Necromancer, revealing Sauron’s dark hand in the events, as he witnesses Azog and his Orc army march forth from Dol Guldur towards the Lonely Mountain.

Inside the mountain, a desperate chase unfolds as Bilbo and the Dwarves reignite the mountain’s forge using Smaug’s own flames to melt down a massive golden statue, hoping to bury the beast beneath molten gold. Though their plan momentarily succeeds, Smaug breaks free from the gold and takes flight, set on destroying Laketown while Bilbo watches helplessly, filled with despair over the chaotic turn of events.
