Just after the heroic efforts of Emmet Brickowski and his companions saved the vibrant city of Bricksburg, a new challenge arises as aliens from the planet Duplo make their appearance. This event unfolds shortly after real-world builder Finn, voiced by Jadon Sand, receives notice from his father, Will Ferrell, that his younger sister is now permitted to join in on the fun with Legos. In a bid for peace, Emmet approaches the Duplo leaders with a heart he cleverly constructs, yet they swiftly devour it, escalating tensions. Lucy, also known as Wyldstyle, attempts to launch an attack, which only leads to a thunderous scream from the alien leader that sends windows shattering all around.
Chaos ensues as the Duplos begin rampaging through Bricksburg, resulting in the destruction of many structures. Despite rallying help from Batman, Unikitty, Metalbeard, and Benny, Emmet and Lucy find themselves overwhelmed and ultimately defeated, while President Business, also portrayed by Will Ferrell, abandons them for a leisurely round of golf.
Fast forward five years and Bricksburg has transformed into Apocalypseburg, a city marked by darkness, gloom, and a pervasive edgy atmosphere. Lucy explains that the Justice League members—Superman, Aquaman, Green Lantern—have all ventured out to battle the Duplos but have not returned. Meanwhile, Batman has opted to remain behind for a solo adventure in a grand fortress alongside Alfred, played by Ralph Fiennes. Emmet stands out as the only one maintaining a cheerful demeanor, and when he attempts to share his coffee with Lucy, she remains too introspective to engage.
In a moment of imaginative recollection, Emmet describes a bizarre dream involving a dolphin clock set to 5:15 and a black hole that consumes his friends, an event he dubs “Ourmamageddon.” He unveils to Lucy that he has constructed a charming house just outside the city, but her concern is that it will attract unwanted attention, believing Emmet to be too whimsical. Indeed, her worries materialize when a ship descends upon the city, targeting their group, and the trio hastily flees after crafting an escape buggy—only to realize they are being pursued due to Emmet signaling with a blinker.
Seeking refuge at Batman’s fortress, they encounter General Sweet Mayhem, who identifies herself as the invader and declares intentions to capture the leader, ultimately mistaking Emmet for a hero. Consequently, she abducts Lucy, Batman, Unikitty, Benny, and Metalbeard. Emmet, desperate and determined to rescue his friends, sets off to rally support, only to face rejection due to his perceived immaturity. Alone, he improvises, transforming his own house into a makeshift ship.
Mayhem pilots the captive Master Builders to the Systar System, landing on a planet ruled by the shape-shifting Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi. Presenting herself as a villain-turned-hero, she entices the heroes to trust her through a catchy song, gaining their favor, except for Lucy. The Queen’s interest in marrying Batman creates tension, leaving him startled.
In space, Emmet toggles through a glassteroid storm, but salvation arrives in the form of Rex Dangervest, who swoops in aboard his ship shaped like a fist. Emmet learns Rex’s backstory—a tale of being abandoned under the dryer and facing loneliness, driving him to become a hardened hero, despite being shaped by past experiences. The duo swiftly teams up, edging closer to their goal of rescuing their friends.
Meanwhile, the Master Builders find themselves at Planet Sparkles, preparing for the unwelcome wedding. As Lucy’s true hair is revealed, Watevra’s bizarre assistants work tirelessly to lift Lucy’s spirits, but she escapes, landing herself next to a Lego version of Bruce Willis. Back on the same planet, Emmet and Rex discover an unexpectedly cheerful community, where even the Justice League members have found camaraderie.
A private dinner occurs between Batman and Watevra, revealing the importance of overcoming insecurities, leading to Batman’s reluctant proposal. A convergence of emotions occurs as numerous guests gather atop a massive wedding cake for their ceremony. Amidst the chaos, Lucy endeavors to halt the ceremony by disrupting the cake. However, an encounter leads to Lucy empathizing with Mayhem, discovering they both share a desire for peace rather than conflict. This realization contrasts Rex’s true motives, igniting Lucy’s determination to protect Emmet.
As the grand wedding commences, the narrative shifts, exposing the underlying reality where Finn’s sister, Bianca, and Finn face consequences for their Lego conflicts. Amid the disorder, Emmet learns a startling truth—Rex is indeed a future version of himself, shaped by loneliness and bitterness after neglect. As Emmet conjures courage, Finn reconciles with Bianca, and together they reshape their Lego worlds, ushering in a new era of harmony.
Having invoked the “grown-up” power, Emmet creates chaos, leading to his ultimate confrontation with Rex. Through Lucy’s intervention, they face Rex as he dissolves into the fabric of the past, with Emmet and Lucy reunited alongside their allies once more.
In an unexpected return, President Business travels back from his golf escapade, only to be swiftly ousted from the new harmonious community. As the dust settles, Lucy revitalizes their beloved home and surprises Emmet with an original album of “Everything is Awesome,” revealing her passionate involvement in its creation—all while reminding them of the joy and friendship that binds them together in their adventurous universe.
