The Party 2018

The film opens with a tense scene featuring a woman, visibly stressed with disheveled hair, as she aims a gun at the audience, leaving us uncertain about her intentions. This shocking moment quickly fades to black, paving the way for the film’s title and opening credits.

Set against the backdrop of a celebratory gathering, we meet Janet, a politician from the opposition party who has just been appointed shadow minister for health. She hosts a small party at her home, inviting her eclectic group of friends. Among the guests are April, accompanied by her estranged German partner Gottfried, who is a life coach and self-declared spiritual healer. Additionally, there are Martha, a women’s studies professor, and her partner Jinny, a famous chef. Lastly, Tom, a banker and Janet’s subordinate, arrives with his wife Marianne, although she is delayed due to work commitments.

As the festivities commence, Bill, Janet’s husband, occupies himself in a corner, disconnected from the celebrations as he listens to music and sips wine. He remains somewhat aloof throughout the evening. Meanwhile, Tom, plagued by anxiety, locks himself in the bathroom to indulge in some cocaine, take a look at the gun he’s brought along, and musters some courage before rejoining the party.

Inside, Janet discreetly communicates with a mysterious lover while chaos unfolds. An errant champagne cork from April breaks a window during a toast, leading to a minor injury for Janet. This mishap doesn’t deter the party’s spirit, but soon after, Jinny announces her pregnancy with triplets, a celebration soon overshadowed by Bill’s shocking disclosure of his terminal illness. As the conversation shifts, Gottfried suggests that Bill might find hope in spirituality rather than cling to the harsh truths of modern medicine, prompting Bill to waver on his staunch atheism.

With the kitchen filled with smoke from burnt cakes, Jinny and Tom scramble to clear the air, but as the tension builds, Jinny expresses concern about Tom’s gun, which leads to her feeling unwell and vomiting in the bathroom. When she and Tom discuss the recent events, a rift begins to form between the couple.

As Janet struggles with her husband’s deteriorating state, she expresses a desire to resign and tend to him, only for Bill to reveal he is leaving her for Marianne. This revelation sends Janet into a downward spiral of frustration and regret, culminating in a physical confrontation with Bill. Meanwhile, Gottfried attempts to mediate between the men, but tensions escalate, culminating in Tom accidentally injuring Bill, leaving him unconscious.

In a state of panic, Tom and Gottfried fear they may have killed Bill and frantically seek help. Events unfold in the backyard where Jinny and Martha engage in a heartfelt discussion about motherhood and their relationship, filled with tension and fear of the future.

Back inside, a frustrated Janet, after uncovering the abandoned gun, locks herself in the bathroom. Desperation overwhelms her as she makes a final call and confides in April, who surprisingly offers her heartfelt praise, lightening Janet’s burdens temporarily.

As others grow increasingly concerned, Martha knocks on the bathroom door in search of Janet, who emerges to attempt reviving Bill. With a moment of connection, he questions how they reached such a troubling point. Just as hope appears to reignite, the doorbell rings, leading to a climactic moment where Janet brandishes the gun again. Fueled by betrayal and anger, she confronts the visitor—unseen to the audience—exclaiming, > “You told me you loved me. ME! You traitor!” The film concludes with a black screen, leaving viewers in suspense about her next move as the credits roll.
