BFF takes on a whole new meaning as Goody (played by Alicia Silverstone) and Stacey (the striking Krysten Ritter, a reincarnation of Bettie Page) venture into the nightlife together. Goody, a relic from the past born in 1841, has had an exceedingly long existence, having been transformed into a vampire by the stem vampire Cisserus. Unlike her more ruthless counterparts, she prefers a diet of rats over humans, embracing her softer side. The excitement of the Roaring Twenties, marked by the emergence of flappers, invigorates her as she reminisces about times less oppressive.
As the decades pass, things get wild, with the Fifties, Sixties, and Seventies offering a thrilling backdrop. But then in 1992, Stacey enters the scene, brought back to life from her troubled background as a drug addict by Cisserus. In no time, she becomes Goody’s sister and mentor, eager to introduce the clueless Goody to modern technology, email, and even Green Day. With Goody’s social skills lacking and her 1970s wardrobe stuck in a time loop, she looks to Stacey for help—especially when it comes to the tricky task of applying lipstick, a challenge for vampires who cannot see their reflections.
Despite their contrasting personalities, they form a comical duo, off to Goth night at a local club. Goody takes to the fire escape at unnatural speed while Stacey crawls down the building like a giant cockroach. But there’s more to this nocturnal existence than just fun. Goody resents the title of ‘vampire,’ preferring the term ELF (Extended Life-Form), and they both attend a support group called Sanguines Anonymous, where they bond with fellow ghouls, including Vlad Tepesh, who hasn’t impaled anyone for 362 years.
Their feeding habits are indeed odd, often consuming rats as if they were sipping soda through straws. When Goody becomes a little too enthusiastic over a bleeding drummer, leaping onto him to sample the blood, it showcases her unusual character, especially as she has a special skill that makes her tongue famed (or infamous). In the club, Goody wields her vampire persuasion powers to steer Juicy Girl, a woman who seems too keen on bad boys, away from trouble.
Complicating matters, Goody feels the need to hide her true age from Stacey—she’s actually 151 years older! Their adventures escalate when Stacy begins dating Joey Van Helsing. Unbeknownst to her, he is the very descendant of the infamous vampire hunter, which adds a twist of classic Romeo and Juliet to their burgeoning romance. Meanwhile, Goody connects with her old flame, Danny Horowitz, under the guise of “Susan” to explain her eternal youth without revealing her true nature.
Tensions rise when the community faces threats from Van Helsing, who is prowling for vampires, investigating the wave of mysterious happenings in the neighborhood—unexpected moves proving to draw the vampires deeper into an intricate plot involving disasters in the daylight, jury duty inconveniences, and the constant fear of sunlight that could turn them to ash.
When a dinner date at the Van Helsing residence takes a turn, Stacy must mask her true nature with bronzing products and artificial tans. However, as sunrise approaches, she’s forced to escape while Joey confronts the shocking truth behind her icy skin. The duo’s escapades reach a climax as they deal with Cisserus, who has her own agenda amidst the chaos. With a chainsaw in hand, Joey faces off against her, leading to a showdown that pits family ties against the grim realities of their undead lives.
In a whirlwind of choices and consequences, the narrative intertwines with themes of acceptance and the challenge of staying true to oneself—despite the changes brought on by their vampire life. Ultimately, Goody and Stacy must navigate this bizarre reality, confronting not only their roots but also the threats that loom ever closer, as they seek to understand their place in a world that’s both familiar and fraught with peril.
