Plot Summary

It’s 1957, and the film begins aboard a Russian cargo plane soaring across the icy expanse of its airspace. Inside the cockpit, two pilots engage in conversation about their mysterious cargo. The co-pilot, determined to handle the situation, descends into the cargo hold where he encounters three comrades distracted by American nude magazines. He offers them a bottle of vodka but secretly plans a violent betrayal. After deliberately dropping the vodka, he pulls out a gun and murders one of the men. A gunfight erupts in the hold, with chaos ensuing. The pilot is shot, leading the plane on a catastrophic descent until it crashes into the frigid terrain of Antarctica, leaving no survivors.

Fast forward to the present day, the landscape reveals a desolate Antarctica, where our protagonist—Carrie Stetko—portrayed by Kate Beckinsale, navigates through an international research center buzzing with scientists preparing to depart before the extended winter sets in. As she sheds her layers of protective clothing in her room, Carrie hangs her US Marshal badge nearby and steps into a warm shower. The sound of her name draws her away from the warmth, leading her to Doc, played by Tom Skerritt. Their conversation reveals that she plans to leave her post instead of enduring another freezing winter, where a discussion about whiteouts surfaces—an obscured state where visibility is nearly zero, and survival becomes precarious.

As preparations continue for an incoming storm, Carrie encounters Russell Haden, a towel-clad teammate, whose rather forward advances pique her disinterest, especially after witnessing him streaking. Shortly after, Shaun Doyle informs her of a possible body discovered in isolation. Intrigued, Carrie decides to investigate.

Carrie and Doc embark on a flight to the remote location aboard a plane piloted by Delfy. Upon arrival, they uncover a frozen body, identified as McGuire, a scientist presumed to have perished in a climbing accident. Yet, the peculiar circumstances raise questions about foul play, especially when they discover a heinously stitched leg wound and a fatal axe-induced stab to the chest. Carrie becomes increasingly alarmed, suspecting a murderer lurks nearby.

Delving into McGuire’s past, she identifies his associates—Mooney and Rubin—who were on a quest for meteorites. Carrie travels to Vostock, an abandoned Russian base, in search of answers but finds it deserted. Supplying herself with severe weather gear, she braves the outside elements to investigate. It is here that the tension escalates when she discovers a bloodied Mooney; before she can react, she is confronted by a shadowy figure—a killer armed with an axe.

Carrie narrowly escapes, her fingers frozen to the metal door handle, causing alarming frostbite injuries that require amputation. As she grapples with the aftermath of the attack, her memories flashback to a harrowing incident in Miami, where her partner failed to save her from a violent encounter. Returning to action, Carrie, alongside Delfy and a U.N. agent named Robert Pryce—performed by Gabriel Macht—converge at the facility to return with the bodies.

Their investigation reveals missing links leading them to a clandestine Russian cargo plane, once involved in a gruesome firefight. Discovering that the plane had housed valuable canisters, they deduce that a diamond scheme is interwoven with the mystery. When the shack collapses, all hope seems lost until Pryce recalls the plane’s explosive roof hatch, allowing their escape.

Carrie succinctly connects the dots—confrontations with Russell unveil his role in the nefarious activities. Meanwhile, a storm brews, forcing an evacuation. As chaos ensues, Carrie inadvertently finds herself face to face with the killer, ultimately neutralizing him with a shovel just before the storm engulfs the area.

In a series of revelations, Carrie uncovers the identities of those within the canisters—and to her horror, she realizes Doc’s treachery as he confesses to the scheme. He attempts to flee into the storm, leaving Carrie in a state of disbelief, yet resolute in her duty.

As winter ends and life resumes at the facility, Carrie finds solace in the Aurora Australis. Through her journey, she has transformed, finally permitting herself to notice the beauty surrounding her, closing the film on a poignant note of redemption and reflection.
