Who does Janet Van Dyne encounter first in the Quantum Realm?
During her 30 years lost in the Quantum Realm, Janet Van Dyne, the original Wasp and wife of Hank Pym, meets an exiled traveler known as Kang. Kang, described as a “time-traveling, Multiversal adversary,” seeks Pym Particles to power his ship and activate a device that could grant him the ability to travel through time and alternate realities at will.
In the present, following the epic battle against Thanos, former criminal and Avenger Scott Lang has adapted to a new life, enjoying success as an author while sharing a happy relationship with his partner, Hope Van Dyne. Hope, the daughter of Hank and Janet, has embraced her legacy as the Wasp and is directing her father’s company toward positive contributions to society. Their teenage daughter, Cassie Lang, has emerged as a passionate activist, working to assist those affected by the Blip, leading to tension with Scott.
During a visit to her grandparents, Cassie excitedly reveals her creation of a device designed to connect with the Quantum Realm. Janet’s immediate alarm leads her to deactivate the device; however, they’ve already sent a signal that results in a portal pulling everyone into the mysterious Quantum Realm, as well as some of Hank’s highly evolved ants.
Separated from the others, Scott and Cassie encounter locals who are rebelling against Kang’s tyranny, while Hope, Janet, and Hank venture into a sprawling city seeking answers. They encounter Lord Krylar, once an ally of Janet but now a puppet for Kang. After fleeing Krylar’s stronghold with stolen technology, the Langs link up with rebel leader Jentorra, who reveals how Janet’s past choices inadvertently facilitated Kang’s rise to power.
The situation escalates when Kang’s forces, commanded by M.O.D.O.K.—originally known as Darren Cross—mount an assault against the rebels. Cross, having survived his prior encounter with Scott in the Quantum Realm, has become a monstrous, cybernetically altered entity bent on chaos.
In a striking confession aboard Krylar’s ship, Janet explains her traumatic history with Kang, who deceived her into believing they could escape the Quantum Realm together. After witnessing Kang’s merciless intentions, Janet chose to oppose him and sabotaged their potential escape. However, Kang soon seized control and expanded his dominion.
Amidst all this turmoil, Kang takes Cassie hostage, bargaining for Scott to retrieve the power core. Scott must shrink down to a surreal realm filled with alternate versions of himself before Hope intervenes, allowing them to reclaim the core. Betrayal ensues as Kang breaks their agreement, capturing Janet and obliterating their means of escape with Hank still aboard. Thanks to the resilience of Scott’s ants, who have evolved and gained intelligence, Hank joins forces with Scott and Hope against Kang.
With the stakes heightened, Kang reveals his ambition to unleash his army across timelines to eliminate all his variants and solidify his rule. However, the oppressed inhabitants of the Quantum Realm mount a rebellion, forcing Kang to engage directly in the conflict. In this critical moment, Janet escapes and strives to gain control of the power core.
As the fierce struggle rages on, Hank’s ants dramatically alter the tide, aiding the rebels in their stand against Kang. In a pivotal twist, Cassie manages to sway Cross to their side, leading to his ultimate sacrifice in the fight against evil. The technologically advanced ants overwhelm Kang, complicating his already dire situation.
Just as Janet stabilizes the power core, she, Pym, Hope, and Cassie leap through a portal back to their reality. Meanwhile, Scott finds himself in a climactic showdown with Kang, who attacks with ferocity. In a final effort, Hope returns to aid Scott, and together they vanquish Kang by casting him and Pym Particles into the power core.
With Cassie reopening the portal for their return, Scott resumes his normal life, although he begins to feel unease about Kang’s earlier warnings concerning the consequences of his demise, brushing it off as mere paranoia.
In a tantalizing mid-credits scene, various Kang variants, led by Immortus, lament Kang’s fate and scheme for their Multiversal uprising. Meanwhile, a post-credits scenario sees Loki and Mobius M. Mobius encounter yet another incarnation of Kang in Victor Timely during the year 1901.
