The tour guide, Garrett (Zach Woods), leads a group through the eerie Aldridge mansion in New York City, recounting the tragic tale of Gertrude Aldridge, a mentally disturbed woman who was imprisoned in the basement by her father. To give the visitors a thrill, Garrett orchestrates a spooky trick with a candlestick, but unbeknownst to him, a strange device beneath the nightstand is activating. As he finishes his tour, ominous noises from the basement pique his curiosity. However, when the mansion’s doorknob becomes too hot to touch, he finds himself trapped inside. In a frantic attempt to escape, Garrett tries to break a window, only to have the stool thrown back at him. In desperation, he heads toward the basement, where he finds himself surrounded by rising green slime and a ghostly apparition emerging from the floor.

Meanwhile, two physics researchers, Abby Yates and Erin Gilbert, authors of a now-unpopular book that asserts the existence of ghosts, are at a crossroads in their careers. While Erin has distanced herself to pursue a respectable academic career at Columbia University, Abby remains passionate about the paranormal, collaborating with the eccentric engineer Dr. Jillian Holtzmann at the Kenneth P. Higgins Institute of Science. When Erin discovers that their book has been republished, jeopardizing her chance at tenure, she realizes that her past association with it could ruin her reputation. A haunted mansion case emerges, leading to a reunion with Abby, which ignites their investigation into the supernatural.

Together with Holtzmann, they set out to investigate the Aldridge mansion, armed with their equipment. Upon entering, they document the chilling ghost of Gertrude, whose demonic face and ectoplasmic possession instill fear and excitement within the team. This encounter reignites Erin’s belief in the paranormal and strengthens her bond with Abby. The trio captures a video declaring ghosts are real; however, this footage gets Erin fired from Columbia. Undeterred, she joins Abby and Holtzmann’s initiative, only to face dismissals from their university as they continue their ghost research from a Chinese restaurant above a new base of operations.

They name their group “Conductors of the Metaphysical Examination.” To bolster their efforts, they hire the charming but inept Kevin Beckman (Chris Hemsworth) as their receptionist. Meanwhile, Patty Tolan, a MTA worker, crosses paths with an erratic individual named Rowan North, who is launching a sinister scheme to summon ghosts throughout the city.

Patty takes the lead when an opportunity arises to investigate a ghost sighting in the subway. Armed with the equipment crafted by Holtzmann, the Ghostbusters capture a ghost, but the public remains skeptical of their findings. As they attempt to build their reputation, they coin their catchy motto, “no ghosts allowed,” which gains traction. Patty contributes her knowledge of New York City, invaluable protective gear, and a repurposed hearse called “Ecto-1.”

As they grapple with their newfound roles, the Ghostbusters find themselves combating Rowan’s plots to summon supernatural forces to wreak havoc. They chase spirits in a theater, where a ghostly event spirals out of control when a massive ghost monster emerges. While fighting off various spectral threats, they must also contend with public skepticism, culminating in confrontations with dismissive myth busters like Martin Heiss.

As the team uncovers Rowan’s plot to create an army of ghosts, he becomes increasingly desperate. After a climactic showdown where the Ghostbusters confront a towering version of the ghost logo, their ingenuity comes to the forefront. Utilizing Ecto-1’s reactor, they execute a risky plan that ultimately reverses the supernatural assault, but not without strife, as they have to save each other from the brink of disaster.

Following their victory, the team receives covert support from the mayor’s office, allowing them to expand their venture into a larger facility. Despite their challenges, tributes spring up across the city as New Yorkers celebrate their Ghostbusters. In the aftermath, the team prepares to face more spectral challenges, including a teasing hint about Zuul during an intriguing post-credits scene.
