What incident caused Leo to become mute?
In 2035, Leo, a mute bartender portrayed by Alexander Skarsgård, navigates the gritty nightlife of a Berlin strip club owned by Maksim (Gilbert Owuor). Leo, who has been muteness since a childhood accident involving a boat propeller, comes from an Amish background that shuns technology. He is romantically involved with Naadirah (Seyneb Saleh), a waitress who desperately needs money to escape her own troubles.
In an effort to stay connected, Naadirah gifts Leo the oldest mobile phone she could find, symbolizing their bond amidst the chaos. However, crisis strikes when a rowdy customer named Stuart (Noel Clarke) sexually harasses Naadirah, prompting Leo to physically defend her honor.
As Leo and Naadirah’s relationship deepens, they are thrown into a world where danger lurks around every corner. During one intimate encounter, Naadirah attempts to discuss something significant, but is quickly swept away by Leo’s thoughtful gift of a handmade bed, leading to a passionate moment between them.
Meanwhile, Cactus Bill (Paul Rudd) and Duck (Justin Theroux), American surgeons entangled in the Berlin criminal circuit, engage in dubious activities. They run a black-market clinic aimed at treating injuries that can’t be reported to authorities. Bill, a US military soldier on the run, dreams of escaping Berlin with his daughter Josie (Mia-Sophie), while Duck revels in the chaos, operating a cybernetic surgery side business. Their lives become even more entwined with Leo’s as their secrets begin to unravel.
When Leo’s attempts to reach Naadirah become fruitless, he turns to her roommate Luba (Robert Sheehan) for assistance, but meets resistance. In desperation, Leo follows a lead to a pimp named Oswald (Dominic Monaghan), who manages the appointments of Maksim’s prostitutes. Misunderstandings arise as Oswald mistakes Leo for a new player in the shady business, leading to complications that spiral out of control.
As Leo assembles clues leading to Naadirah, he uncovers a web of deceit involving Cactus Bill, who is linked to her mysterious disappearance. In a shocking twist, Leo learns that Naadirah is Josie’s mother and that Cactus Bill, her ex-husband, orchestrated her abduction after drugging her.
With tensions running high, Leo realizes he must act fast, as Bill grows suspicious of Leo’s inquiries. Desperate for answers, Leo confronts cruelty and betrayal, culminating in a violent showdown where he finds Naadirah’s lifeless body, a victim of Bill’s dark past.
In a climactic struggle, Leo confronts Cactus Bill, a confrontation that leads to tragic consequences and a life-altering decision. Using an Electrolarynx implanted by Duck, Leo finds his voice again, not only to seek justice but to protect young Josie from further danger.
As the narrative unfolds, it showcases themes of love, loss, and the desperate struggle for survival in a world marred by moral corruption. With the bonds of family, trauma, and redemption intertwined, Leo’s journey becomes a powerful tale of resilience in the face of overwhelming odds, whispering hope amidst despair.
