Unable to find a suitable apartment in Seattle, Washington, journalist Nick Elliot decides to venture into the suburbs. There, he comes across a sign advertising a guest house available for rent, owned by the frequently traveling couple, Liv and Cliff Forrester. Without much hesitation, Nick accepts the property and begins to renovate it. However, his presence quickly captures the attention of the Forresters’ 14-year-old daughter, Darian, who begins to exhibit a keen interest in him.

On his first day at Pique magazine, Nick faces a tough start, being reprimanded for his tardiness and assigned to tackle a particularly unexciting story. As the days pass, Darian makes a surprise visit to the guesthouse, during which she flirtatiously engages with him and bombards him with questions about his investigation. The very next morning, while Nick is taking a shower, she returns with a gift, inviting him to her parents’ party later that week. Unwillingly, Nick attends the gathering, where he feels like a fish out of water amidst the high-society crowd. Seeking a familiar face, he finds Darian, who reveals that she had snuck into the guesthouse and rewritten his article to gain acclaim from his boss.

During a visit to a coastal lighthouse, Nick forgives her for her earlier intrusion, where she confides in him about her social struggles, having accelerated through school grades. One weekend at a barbecue, Amy expresses her apprehensions to Nick regarding Darian’s affections. Following a cryptic phone call from Darian, Nick begins searching for her inside the Forrester household. This deception culminates in Nick’s arrest for a heinous crime he did not commit, as Darian accuses him of assault.

Desperate to clear his name, Nick speculates that Darian masterminded the salacious claim by stealing a used condom from him. Even in the face of evidence, the police side with Darian against Nick. Following his release on bail, Nick learns from Cheyenne about Darian’s previous violent actions against a camp counselor. Convinced he is in grave danger, Nick heads to Darian’s room where he discovers yet another disturbing shrine and a note pleading for forgiveness.

In a climactic confrontation, Darian ambushes him with a gardening tool, and during a struggle, Nick finds himself perilously close to death as she pushes him over the balcony. Just as the situation seems hopeless, Darian’s parents return home, prompting her to flee to the attic. Focusing on survival, Nick revives and continues to seek Darian, ultimately discovering Cheyenne tied to the ominous carousel. In a flurry of chaos, family tensions explode as Darian violently confronts Nick again, leading to physical confrontation.

In the aftermath, Nick relocates to a new apartment with Amy, while Darian begins writing him letters from a mental institution, revealing she has fixated on her new therapist.
