He moved to the US in 1981 to study acting at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. His acting career began in 1984, with his debut in Marek Kanievska's film Another Country. His work has varied between drama, such as in the Oscar-winning Glory (1989), and comedy, such as in Hot Shots! (1991). Elwes has also shown a prolific career in voice-over works in films, television animations, and video games.
