As the mining crew makes its departure from the Shookum Hills Coal Mine, the seasoned miner Schuttmann engages in a heartfelt dialogue with his son Derek about the reckless actions of their colleague, with Derek passionately advocating for a second chance. However, their moment of connection is violently shattered by an unseen horror that encroaches upon them like a chilling specter. In a frantic attempt to safeguard his son, Schuttmann takes action, but fate is cruel, and he is soon viciously attacked, leaving him incapacitated and Derek left to suffer in agonizing distress amidst the desolate surroundings.

Fast-forward several years later, an adventurous group of scientists—Darren, Shawn, Terry, and Jaime—under the bold leadership of Arianne, embark on a daring expedition to unveil the mysteries shrouding Shookum Hills and its notorious coal mine. Once a bustling town, it mysteriously disappeared from contemporary maps in the ’70s, leaving behind only shadows of its past. Whispers suggest that this vanishing act is intertwined with an underground coal fire, which has triggered the emergence of ancient sinkholes, consuming everything in their wake. Driven by conviction, Darren believes that an unusual and rare mineral ignited these fires; yet, as they scour deeper into the enigma, they will uncover threats far more terrifying than they anticipated.

During a stop at a local store, Arianne bravely steps inside to gather supplies and seek direction toward the elusive Shookum Hills. The storekeeper’s bizarre claim of unfamiliarity with the place only fuels her determination. Persisting in her inquiry prompts the storekeeper to caution her to retrace her steps. Outside, unbeknownst to them, he discreetly alerts an unseen force of impending trouble as a vehicle begins to follow them. Utilizing her quick wit, Arianne enables the team to elude their pursuers, but they soon confront a dirt road obstructed by an electrified fence. Igniting a sense of adventure, they break through, unveiling the long-abandoned Shookum Hills Mine, initially met with excitement mixed with confusion over the improvised barriers. Upon lowering instruments to map the underground tunnels, Terry suddenly disappears into the darkness below. Despite Arianne and Jaime’s desperate search for him, he remains elusive, while Darren and Shawn encounter an enraged local, Dale, who confronts them for tampering with the sinkhole. In their fright, they knock him unconscious, a crucial misstep that will haunt them.

Reuniting with her companions, Arianne unveils the unsettling truth: monstrous entities lurk within the tunnels. Panic ensues as the group retreats into the encroaching woods, inadvertently leaving Shawn behind, leading to another tragic loss as Dale succumbs to his injuries. Surprisingly, they are promptly rescued by locals led by Schuttmann himself, who unveils the grim reality dwelling beneath their feet: terrifying creatures that have driven the town to extinction. The remaining townsfolk have remained behind, their mission to contain these dreadful beings.

With this knowledge, Arianne eagerly volunteers to return with Ellroy and Shelby. Darren and Jaime decide to accompany her. However, as they delve deeper into the treacherous tunnels, they are besieged by creatures. Ellroy heroically sacrifices himself to draw the monsters away, allowing his friends to escape. In a similar act of bravery, Shelby diverts attention from Arianne and the men, insisting they flee quickly. Jaime’s attempt to use a grenade against the beasts ends in tragedy when one creature disrupts him, leading to a catastrophic explosion that claims yet another life.

The gripping tension escalates as Darren, now seemingly exhausted and despondent, confesses a harrowing truth that shatters Arianne’s trust: the expedition was merely a facade, aimed at uncovering the rare mineral desired by a ruthless coalition of coal miners. Overcome with betrayal, she flees with the intention of returning with reinforcements, her determination swiftly quashed when she is ensnared by one of the creatures lurking above ground, its venom rendering her helpless.

Upon regaining consciousness, a bleak reality sinks in as Arianne finds herself adrift on a makeshift raft alongside Shelby’s lifeless body. As she nears the lair of the monstrous species, she is reunited with Darren and Shawn, their spirits dimmed by the grim understanding that these beasts are not mere mindless entities, but rather a highly organized community thriving like ants or bees.

Forced to confront the harrowing fate of her comrades, Arianne encounters the queen creature—an awe-inspiring, yet grotesque entity that exudes an ominous aura. An attempt to sacrifice her to this royal horror is thwarted when she manages to overcome the toxin and retaliates with a grenade, striking the queen’s grotesque form.

In a frantic bid for survival, Arianne teams up with Darren as they strive to escape, only for a creature to intercept their path. As Darren succumbs to the mutating poison, he chooses to sever their last lifeline, prioritizing Arianne’s safety by relinquishing his own life.

In the ensuing chaos, as locals converge on the mine, Arianne is once again enveloped in despair. However, the intervention of Schuttmann offers her a glimmer of hope, sparing her from another potential tragedy. The relentless creatures are forced back into the darkness from which they emerged, leaving Arianne grappling with the emotional burden of Darren’s sacrifice.

As she journeys back to safety beside Schuttmann, shadows of personal grief accompany him. He reveals the tragedy of his son’s premature death, driving him to confront these monstrous threats. He implores Arianne to unite with him in his mission to ensure the safety of their world from these malevolent beasts. After initial hesitation, Arianne resolves to stand shoulder to shoulder with Schuttmann against the encroaching horror, motivated by regret, compassion, and a desire to confront the terrors they have unearthed.
