Who kidnaps Maria?
In the turbulent final years of the Mexican Revolution, American rancher J.W. Grant finds himself in a harrowing situation when his wife, Maria, is kidnapped by the notorious Jesus Raza ([Jack Palance]). Desperate for her safe return, Grant assembles a skilled team of experts: Henry “Rico” Fardan ([Lee Marvin]), a master of weaponry; Bill Dolworth ([Burt Lancaster]), known for his expertise with explosives; Hans Ehrengard ([Robert Ryan]), the adept horse wrangler; and Jake Sharp ([Woody Strode]), a seasoned Apache scout proficient with a bow and arrow.
Grant has withdrawn an impressive $100,000 in gold coins as ransom. As he gathers his team aboard his private train, he reveals that Raza, a former revolutionary leader turned bandit, has kept Maria captive in a fortified hideout amid the desolate desert landscape. He warns them that the fortress lies 100 miles in every direction from the nearest help and that Raza commands a force of 150 soldiers. With a sense of urgency, Grant promises each man $1,000 upfront and $9,000 upon successful recovery of Maria. However, he admits that even with the ransom arranged, he is uncertain about Maria’s fate.
With the men in place, Rico insists on enlisting Bill, even though he is currently imprisoned for an affair with a married woman. Rico bails him out for $700. Once united, the professionals express skepticism about Raza abducting a woman, despite the ransom note confirming the heinous act. Grant shares that Maria, a native of Mexico, had ventured out for a ride and had not returned by the time the note arrived.
Upon entering Mexico, the group tracks a band of bandits, only to be ambushed in a narrow mountain canyon. However, Rico’s meticulous preparations allow them to overcome the bandits quickly, seizing their supplies in the process. Bill suggests they shoot the bandit horses due to their lack of food and water, but Hans argues for their release—an early indication of the ethical dilemmas they will face.
As they travel deeper, Bill unveils their proximity to Coyote Pass, where Mexican rebels are rumored to have buried $2 million in Spanish Gold. Tempted by the riches, Bill urges Rico to abandon their primary mission, but Rico stays committed. Eventually, during a scouting mission, Bill gets captured and nearly loses his life to bandits who discover the abandoned horses. Rico, alerted by a pre-established signal, manages to intervene just in time, showcasing the group’s strong bonds and teamwork.
Realizing the strategic advantage of the canyon near Raza’s fortress, they decide to rig it with explosives as a potential escape route. Soon thereafter, they witness Raza’s brutal attack on a government train, resulting in the slaughter of soldiers. Bill, sharing dark history about the Colorados—the ruthless soldiers on that train—reveals how they brutally tormented townsfolk, including Rico’s wife, who barely escaped with her life.
The team carefully follows the train to Raza’s camp, where they learn the layout and observe Raza himself, noting the presence of a female soldier, Chiquita ([Maria Gomez]), who shares a complicated past with Bill. Thanks to the goat-keeper Eduardo Padillia, they gain vital information about Maria’s location within the camp.
With meticulous planning, Rico schemes an attack to distract Raza’s troops while they retrieve Maria. Under the cover of darkness, Rico infiltrates the camp but is thwarted by the sight of Maria willingly engaging with Raza, revealing the deception they have fallen into. Retreating with her to the train, they find themselves confronted by the bandits once more, who had taken Hans hostage. A tense standoff ensues, but the bandits waver, fearing for Maria’s safety.
As they make their escape, Maria’s façade crumbles when she admits that Grant had merely arranged her marriage, and she yearns to return to her original love, Raza. In an attempt to unify with her true affection, she makes a desperate bid for freedom, leading to a chain of explosive events that involve vast sacrifices from the professionals.
Ultimately, Raza is captured, and despite Grant’s dark intentions towards him, Dolworth steps in to protect both Raza and Maria. As the professionals confront Grant’s dishonor, culminating in a rivalry of ideals, they ride off together into the dust-laden horizon, forever changed by their encounter in the chaos of revolution.
