Claudia Cardinale, born Claude Joséphine Rose Cardinale on April 15, 1938, is a Tunisian-Italian actress. Raised in La Goulette, a neighbourhood of Tunis, Tunisia, she is perhaps best known for her roles in several classic films of the 1960s including Rocco and His Brothers (1960), Girl with a Suitcase (1961), The Leopard (1963), and Fellini's 8½ (1963). In 1963, she entered Hollywood, appearing in The Pink Panther opposite David Niven. Her Hollywood career lasted till 1968 with films such as Blindfold (1965), Lost Command (1966), The Professionals (1966), Don't Make Waves (1967). She returned to Italian and French cinema and won the David di Donatello for Best Actress award for her roles in Il giorno della civetta (1968) and A Girl in Australia (1971). She has been an outspoken advocate for women's rights and has been a UNESCO goodwill ambassador for the Defence of Women's Rights since March 2000.
