Rafael Bertrand Agramonte (20 August 1917 – 5 October 1983) was a Cuban-born actor who became a recognizable presence in the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. Born in Camagüey, Cuba, he began his film career in the mid‑1940s, quickly adapting to the stylistic demands of Mexican melodrama and comedy, which allowed him to bridge cultural gaps between his native land and his adopted industry. Over a span of more than two decades, Bertrand appeared in a diverse array of productions, ranging from swash‑buckling adventures to sophisticated crime dramas, demonstrating a versatility that earned him steady work from 1945 through 1971. One of his most memorable roles was the eponymous gentleman thief A. J. Raffles in the 1958 Mexican adaptation, where he infused the character with a uniquely Latin charm while preserving the aristocratic wit of the original English creation.
