Escaping the dreariness of a unfulfilling marriage, Ray Yale finds himself swept up in a passionate yet complicated affair with the enchanting and troubled Carla. As their relationship deepens, Ray’s ethics are put to the ultimate test when Carla reveals a risky opportunity: the cash her controlling husband has amassed from crime. This moment sets the stage for a daring escape… if only things were as straightforward as they appear.

In this noir-inspired thriller from Australia, we meet Ray Yale (David Roberts), a construction worker who is discontented in his marriage to Martha. While working on a luxe resort hotel near Sydney, he can’t help but notice Carla (Claire van der Boom), a lively hairdresser who resides next door. Carla, trapped in a relationship with a low-level mobster named Greg, yearns for excitement and soon embarks on a steamy affair with Ray.

Carla devises a bold plan to liberate herself: they will steal the hidden money, burn down the house, and escape together, leaving Greg to believe his cash has perished in the flames. Although Ray is reluctant to embrace a criminal lifestyle, he finds it hard to resist Carla’s allure. As the plan unfolds, anxiety grips Ray, and when he tries to pull back at the last second, he faces dire consequences. His attempts to reach Billy (Joel Edgerton), the hired hand to incinerate the house, fail tragically.

The situation spirals further out of control when Ray discovers that Greg’s elderly mother was inside during the fire, leading him to the horrifying realization that he may be implicated in a murder. With Billy not hesitating to leverage this new information for his own gain, Ray must confront the dark path he has been drawn into. Directed by Nash Edgerton, known for his work as a top stuntman in the Australian film industry, The Square explores the chaotic aftermath of temptation and betrayal.
