Hannah Faber, portrayed by Angelina Jolie, is a dedicated smoke-jumper who finds herself grappling with the aftermath of a tragic incident that claimed the lives of three campers and a fellow smoke-jumper in a devastating forest fire. Now stationed in a fire lookout tower in Montana’s Park County, she is burdened by grief and descends into a cycle of depression, trying to drown her sorrows through perilous acts linked to smoke jumping.

Meanwhile, Owen Casserly, played by Jake Weber, is a forensic accountant who becomes entangled in a dangerous situation when he uncovers the suspicious deaths of his boss, a district attorney, and his family, which he believes to be a result of a contracted killing. Fearing for his life and that of his son, Connor, portrayed by Finn Little, Owen goes on the run, seeking refuge with his brother-in-law, Ethan Sawyer, a Deputy Sheriff. In a call to Ethan, Owen requests help in gathering media attention to expose his findings, all while Ethan remains concerned about Hannah’s fragile emotional state.

As tensions rise, Owen and Connor find themselves hunted by the assassins, Jack, played by Aidan Gillen, and Patrick, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult. They track Owen’s whereabouts to his home, only to find he has already fled. The assassins manage to force Owen and Connor off the road, leading to a dramatic cliffside encounter. In a desperate act, Owen entrusts crucial evidence to Connor before confronting the killers.

As the search intensifies, Ethan and Sheriff Boots Southerland return to the scene of Owen’s wrecked car, while Hannah fortuitously finds Connor during her patrol. She brings him back to the tower to ensure his safety. However, the assassins, under the orders of their boss, are relentless, setting fires as a diversion and interrogating Ethan’s pregnant wife, Allison, for Connor’s whereabouts.

Hannah learns that the radio in the lookout tower has been disabled due to a lightning strike, forcing her and Connor to face peril as the raging fire blocks their escape. Meanwhile, Ethan attempts to protect Allison from the lurking threats. When the assassins confront Hannah and Connor at the fire tower, a tense standoff ensues, leading to intense, deadly confrontations.

In the wake of the chaos, Hannah fights fiercely to protect Connor, ultimately overpowering Patrick and leaving him to succumb to the advancing flames. However, the danger is far from over. With the blaze closing in, Ethan and Allison are left trapped as they cling to life amidst the chaos.

As dawn breaks after the fire ravages the land, Hannah is reunited with her former smoke-jumping team, who rescue her, Connor, and Allison. Tragically, Ethan has succumbed to his injuries. With the future uncertain, Hannah vows to support Connor as he prepares to share his father’s critical evidence, promising to guide him through the challenges ahead.
