As the clock strikes 2050, the once-thriving Kepler 822 research facility, situated at the unfathomable depths of the Mariana Trench, is rocked by an unforeseen seismic event. Amidst the chaos and destruction, mechanical engineer Norah Price (Kristen Stewart) and her colleagues, Rodrigo (Mamoudou Athie) and Paul (T.J. Miller), scramble to reach the safety of the escape pod bay. The facility's 36,000-foot depth and crushing pressure, equivalent to 8 tons per square inch, make every moment count.

The eerie silence that precedes such catastrophes is punctuated by whispers of unexplained phenomena and strange sightings at the site. Tian Industries, operators of the Kepler station, had dismissed these anomalies as mere rumor, but now they seem all too real. The team's desperate bid for survival takes them to the control base, where they find biologist Emily Haversham (Jessica Henwick) and engineer Liam Smith (John Gallagher Jr.), struggling to establish contact with the surface.

The gravity of their situation becomes apparent when they discover that the power core of the Kepler station has lost its cooling, threatening catastrophic consequences. Captain Lucien (Vincent Cassel), the only survivor in the vicinity, proposes a perilous journey across the ocean floor to Roebuck 641, hoping to resurface from there. The team must navigate an elevator down to reach the treacherous terrain.

As they descend into the darkness, Rodrigo's defective helmet implodes under the crushing pressure, leaving him a tragic casualty of their desperate quest. In the aftermath, Smith and Paul investigate a distress beacon from one of the escape pods, only to stumble upon a gruesome discovery: a body in the rubble, with an otherworldly creature emerging from its back, attacking them. Smith kills the creature and brings it on board for examination.

Biologist Haversham's subsequent analysis reveals that this previously undiscovered species thrives in environments heated by hydrothermal pockets, hinting at the catastrophic drilling incident having disturbed a hidden world beneath their feet. As they face an uncertain future, the surviving crew must confront the true extent of their situation and the unknown horrors lurking in the dark depths.

As the quintet ventures towards the ocean floor, their journey is suddenly disrupted by the catastrophic explosion of the Kepler above, which rains down debris and puts them in perilous proximity to impending doom. Smith (actor name) takes a direct hit, but Price (actor name) and Lucien's swift intervention saves him from further harm. The trio manages to navigate through an access tunnel to an intermediate station, where they can recharge and clean their suits, although it becomes apparent that Smith's oxygen scrubber is severely compromised due to the debris. Meanwhile, Paul succumbs to a gruesome attack by an unknown predator, dragged underwater and lost forever.

Upon reaching the midpoint station, the remaining crew members bear witness to the utter devastation as a 6000-ton drill bit is reduced to mere fragments. It becomes increasingly clear that humanity's reckless drilling has awakened a fury beneath the waves, with the ocean now exacting a deadly revenge. As they prepare to depart the access tunnel, it becomes apparent that Smith's damaged oxygen pod will suffocate him from the toxic fumes generated by the explosion.

Unwilling to abandon another crew member to their fate, Price, Lucien, and Haversham (actor name) decide to assist Smith in his precarious state. The four set off across the treacherous ocean floor, only for a humanoid creature to emerge and drag Smith into a dark cave. Lucien valiantly rescues him, but at the cost of sacrificing himself to spare Price from the mounting pressure differential.

Price finds herself alone at the abandoned Shepard station, where she manages to repair her damaged diving suit before continuing towards Roebuck. As she traverses the desolate ocean floor, she reunites with Haversham and Smith, and together they struggle to drag the ailing Smith forward. Upon entering Roebuck, they discover a macabre nest of humanoid creatures suspended from the ceiling, which they attempt to sneak past. However, the sound of Haversham's oxygen alarm awakens the creatures.

Price is partially consumed by one of the monsters but manages to kill it and free herself. The trio finally reaches the escape pod bay, only to discover that only two pods are functional. Price and Haversham laboriously coax Smith into a pod before persuading him to take the last available spot. As they depart, a behemoth creature emerges from the depths, attacking Roebuck while its smaller kin pursue the two remaining escape pods in hot pursuit.

As Price (actress name) confronts the grim reality of her mortality, she takes a drastic step to ensure the destruction of the Roebuck's nuclear core, unleashing a cataclysmic explosion that eradicates the monstrous creatures and clears a path for the escape pods to breach the surface. The aftermath is marked by sensationalized headlines declaring a somber tally of only two survivors, tacitly implying that the other pods perished in the mayhem.

Meanwhile, Tian Industries, seemingly oblivious to the devastating consequences of their actions, turns a deaf ear to the whispers of investigation and instead readies itself for an audacious expansion of its drilling operations, as if the very fabric of reality had not been torn asunder by the events that transpired.
