The resourceful astronaut then lures the extraterrestrial menace away by setting their couch ablaze and ejecting it from the house, allowing the brothers to pursue.

As tensions simmer, Walter demands that the astronaut depart, but Danny’s more open-minded approach allows him to stay. As Walter becomes increasingly agitated, he accuses his brother of cheating by moving his piece prematurely. When he attempts to rectify the situation by pushing the piece back and taking his next turn, Zathura reacts as if Walter had indeed cheated, ejecting him from the house. However, the quick-thinking astronaut intervenes once more, rescuing Walter from certain doom.

With the coast clear, Walter uses another wish card to bring back his astronaut’s younger brother, who had been erased from existence.

As the timeline begins to shift, the astronaut reveals that he is an older version of Walter from an alternate reality. He commends his present self for making a more compassionate choice than he did in his own past, and as the two Walters merge into one being, the astronaut disappears. The Zorgons regroup and launch a massive assault on the house, but Danny emerges victorious, using his skills to win the game.

As the dust settles, it becomes clear that the house is actually sitting atop Zathura, a swirling black hole that has been feeding on the energy of the brothers’ adventure. The siblings find themselves back in their own home, just as their father returns from work, none the wiser about the incredible journey they have shared. With newfound appreciation and understanding between them, Danny and Walter promise to keep their extraordinary experience a secret, vowing not to reveal the truth to anyone, including Lisa.
