In a distant future teeming with floating cars and technological advancements, society finds itself sharply divided into two main classes: the “superiors” who enjoy a privileged life, and the “inferiors,” the rest of the global population struggling at the lower and mid-levels. Uma ([Emma Roberts]), a young affluent girl, faces an unwanted marriage to another superior, Son ([Arnaud Valois]), but her heart lies with Markus ([Jeremy Irvine]), who belongs to the inferior class.
To mold Uma into the ideal daughter, her mother sends her off to Paradise Hills, an isolated institution disguised as a finishing school for rebellious young ladies. Located on a remote island and treating these girls like lab specimens, Paradise Hills is anything but a paradise as it serves as a facility for behavioral modification. Upon awakening in this bizarre environment with no clear memory of how she arrived, Uma encounters new friends: Amarna ([Eiza González]), a rebellious pop star forced to conform after wanting to create her own music, Chloe ([Danielle Macdonald]), a girl whose parents pressure her to become the epitome of beauty, and Yu ([Awkwafina]), who is reeling from parental loss and forced into a superior lifestyle.
On this island, encircled by water with no escape, the four young women forge a bond, sharing their harrowing stories. As they navigate this strange new world, they meet the eccentric headmistress, The Duchess ([Milla Jovovich]), who persistently tries to sway Uma into accepting her fate of marrying Son. Uma grows increasingly suspicious of the lavish surroundings of Paradise, from daily make-up sessions to holographic behavior projections, questioning the motives behind it all.
Amid their clandestine plans to escape, Markus’s unexpected arrival as part of the Paradise staff disrupts everything. A warning from the jealous Amarna alerts Uma to tread carefully, revealing her own secret escape plan involving a smuggled rowboat, merely ten miles from the mainland. Yet, Uma’s feelings for Markus cloud her judgment, leading her to confide in him about their escape plans.
Events take a darker turn when Amarna is abruptly informed of her early graduation. She urges Uma to liberate herself and Markus, hinting at the sinister truth: the milk consumed by the girls is drugged to render them unconscious at night. After an emotionally traumatic session, Uma finds herself drugged and imprisoned in solitary confinement for two weeks, only to wake up realizing she’ll be sent home the next day. Determined to escape, she convinces Chloe and Yu to leave with her under the cover of darkness.
In a twist of fate, as the girls attempt their daring escape, Yu is taken for a chilling final procedure. In a pivotal moment, Uma discovers that their beautiful prison is actually a research facility where their behaviors are surveilled for exploitation, as inferior women are trained to replace them should anything happen.
In a desperate attempt to rescue Yu from the doctors’ clutches, chaos ensues, forcing them to retaliate. Sadly, Yu ends up gravely injured in the fray. Uma uncovers the shocking truth that Markus never intended to save her; rather, he was assigned to assess her reactions in intimate situations. As the girls race against time to hide, they stumble upon their sinister doubles – surgically altered women programmed to mimic them, ready to assume their identities.
Uma’s impassioned speech reveals their horrid reality, emphasizing that they aren’t merely replaceable objects. In their escape bid, tragedy strikes as they lose Yu, forcing Uma and Chloe to carry on. Before they part ways, Uma leaves her precious locket with her replacement, urging the new Uma to despise Son, the man responsible for her father’s demise.
As Uma and Chloe traverse the island, they uncover the grave fate of previous captives, including Amarna, entangled within rose thorns, a victim of the Duchess. The reveal that the Duchess is akin to a vampiric rosebush highlights the horror they face as she ensnares Chloe. Their fight leads to a moment of salvation when Uma’s replica saves her by impersonating her and distracting the Duchess, allowing Uma to finally strike and defeat her.
With a daring escape on the stolen rowboat, Uma and her double, Anna, concoct a devious plan. Anna poses as Uma to marry Son, while the real Uma ensures her vengeance against him. Their paths entwined in deception, Anna feigns shock upon discovering Son’s demise, providing a clean getaway for both as she claims her new freedom. Through cunning and resolve, Uma is set free from her past, embarking on the journey to forge her own destiny.
