A wealthy group of elites engages in a sinister conversation about their upcoming hunt for “deplorables.” Among them are Ted The Doctor (Steve Coulter), Athena Stone (Hilary Swank), Richard (Glenn Howerton), and others, including a consultant named Sgt Dale (Steve Mokate). On Athena’s private jet, a flight attendant chats with Richard when they are interrupted by Randy (Jason Kirkpatrick), a stranger who was not meant to awaken yet. After Ted claims his medical expertise and quickly subdues Randy, Athena finishes him off, revealing that these strangers were transported to the elite’s manor under mysterious circumstances.
A dozen strangers come to consciousness in a forest clearing dubbed Manor House without any recollection of how they arrived. Among them are Gary (Ethan Suplee), Yoga Pants (Emma Roberts), Moses / Staten Island (Ike Barinholtz), and Crystal Creasey (Betty Gilpin). Confused and gagged, they discover keys that allow them to break free. They quickly realize they’ve been specifically chosen not randomly, but due to their conservative beliefs to be hunted in a brutal game devised by wealthy elites.
The horrifying chase takes a deadly turn as Yoga Pants becomes the first victim of a sniper, while Dead Sexy falls prey to a deadly booby trap. The danger escalates as Trucker Shane encounters a landmine. The group’s panic grows when they realize the hunters are located at a command bunker equipped with a clear vantage point. Despite the overwhelming odds, some members, including Target, Big Red, Vanilla Nice, and Staten Island, hope to escape over a nearby fence but suffer losses along the way.
Making their way to a seemingly ordinary gas station run by Ma (Amy Madigan) and Pa (Reed Birney), the strangers receive misleading information which prompts Staten Island to call for help. Unfortunately, the response comes from a member of the elite hunters disguised as an operator. The duo, Ma and Pa, soon reveal their true nature, shooting the strangers and cleaning up the scene to avoid attracting more victims.
However, the tides turn dramatically when Crystal Creasey goes on the offensive, taking down Ma and Pa after discovering their deceitful tactics. Armed with a walkie-talkie stolen from the gas station, she evades high-tech drones tracking her every move. Crystal manages to warn Gary, a conspiracy theorist. Together, they board a train filled with refugees but soon find themselves in more danger as Croatian soldiers storm the train. In this chaos, Crisis Mike admits to being one of the hunters, leading to a brutal confrontation which sees Gary wrest a grenade from him.
As the story deepens, Crystal, alongside Don (Wayne Duvall), discovers the tragic outcome of Gary’s fate and realizes the extent of the conspiracy against them. With revelations about their location in Croatia, exploitation by the elite takes a personal turn when they confront their hunter, Oliver / Fauxnvoy (Macon Blair). In a game of survival, Crystal asserts her strength, taking matters into her own hands, confronting and eliminating threats including Richard, Ted, and others from the elite group.
In a climactic face-off with Athena, they trade blows, and while Athena ultimately falls, Crystal recalls a fable: the story of “the Jackrabbit and the Box Turtle.” Gaining newfound determination from the encounter, she patches herself up, dons Athena’s clothes, and makes her escape via the elite’s private jet, chatting with the same flight attendant from the beginning, marking the end of a brutal but transformative ordeal.
