What's After the Movie
Alan Mowbray, born Alfred Ernest Allen on 18 August 1896 in London, England, was a distinguished English stage and film actor whose career spanned nearly five decades. After serving with valor in the British Army during World I, where he earned the Military Medal and the French Croix de Guerre, he briefly transferred to the Royal Air Force before the armistice, a experience that hardened his disciplined work ethic. He began his theatrical journey in London in 1922 as an actor and stage manager, and by 1923 had crossed the Atlantic to join New York stock companies, quickly making his Broadway debut in “The Sport of Kings” (1926). Mowbray’s screen debut came in 1931 with “God’s Gift to Women,” where his polished demeanor earned him a series of butler roles that would become his signature, a fact even noted by pulp writer Raymond Chandler who lampooned his clipped accent. Throughout the 1930s he appeared in over a hundred films, including the Technicolor classic “Becky Sharp” (1935) and the beloved comedy “Topper” (1937) as the impeccably proper butler Wilkins, a part he reprised in “Topper Takes a Trip” (1939). His supporting turn in the Oscar‑nominated “My Man Godfrey” (1937) further cemented his reputation as a reliable character actor. In the post‑war era Mowbray transitioned to television, headlining the DuMont series “Colonel Humphrey Flack” (1953‑1959) and making memorable guest appearances on shows such as “Maverick” and “The Beverly Hillbillies.” Beyond performance, he was a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild in 1933, serving as its first vice‑president and contributing a personal check to secure the organization’s incorporation. He also helped establish the Hollywood Cricket Club and the British United Services Club, reflecting his enduring ties to both his British heritage and his Hollywood community. Married to actress Lorraine Carpenter in 1927, the couple raised two children, including daughter Patricia, who famously married veteran Canadian actor Douglass Dumbrille. Alan Mowbray died of a heart attack on 25 March 1969 in Hollywood, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and a body of work that continues to charm classic‑film enthusiasts.
