What's After the Movie
Alberto Sordi was an iconic figure of Italian cinema whose career spanned over six decades, beginning as a humble voice‑over artist in the late 1930s and evolving into one of the most beloved actors, directors, and comedians of the post‑war era. Born on 15 June 1920 in Rome, in a family with musical and educational roots, he initially pursued opera, singing in the Sistine Chapel Choir before turning to the stage and eventually to the burgeoning film industry. His deep, resonant voice earned him the role of dubbing Oliver Hardy for Italian audiences, a breakthrough that opened doors to countless background parts at Cinecittà and set the foundation for his later on‑screen success. By the early 1940s Sordi appeared in minor film roles, but his breakthrough came with Mario Mattoli’s The Three Pilots and the celebrated An American in Rome, where his portrayal of the brash Roman everyman Nando Moriconi cemented his status as a national comic hero. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s he partnered with legendary directors such as Federico Fellini, Vittorio De Sica, and Luigi Comencini, delivering memorable performances in The White Sheik, I Vitelloni, The Great War and Everybody Go Home, each film showcasing his rare ability to blend sharp satire with poignant humanity. Sordi’s versatility extended beyond acting; he directed nineteen films, beginning with Fumo di Londra in 1966, and wrote screenplays that often critiqued contemporary Italian society while remaining warmly accessible. His talent was recognized with an impressive array of honors, including ten David di Donatello awards, five Nastro d'Argento, a Golden Globe for Il diavolo, a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement, and the Silver Bear for Best Actor in Berlin. Despite his public fame, Sordi remained discreet about his private life, never marrying and having no children, though he maintained long‑standing relationships and was deeply loyal to his sister Aurelia, with whom he shared a Rome villa for over four decades. A devout Roman Catholic and passionate supporter of AS Roma, he also devoted considerable resources to charity, founding the Fondazione Alberto Sordi to aid the elderly. He passed away on 24 February 2003, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape Italian comedy and cinema.
