What's After the Movie
Ana Torrent Bertrán de Lis, born 12 July 1966, is a critically acclaimed Spanish film actress. She emerged in the industry as a prominent child actress in cinematic classics such as The Spirit of the Beehive (1973), Cría cuervos (1976), Elisa, vida mía (1977), and The Nest (1980). Her performance in Thesis (1996) was met with critical acclaim and resulted in a nomination for the Goya Award for Best Actress. Her career spans from her debut in 1973 up until the present time, featuring a variety of roles and performances in multiple film genres. Torrent was born into an upper-class family in Madrid and made her screen debut at the tender age of seven with the leading role in 'Ana' in El espíritu de la colmena (The Spirit of the Beehive), directed by Víctor Erice. Post her debut, she continued to enjoy success in films as a child but only began to consider herself genuinely an actress in her late teens. Later in her career, in 1989, Torrent acted alongside Sharon Stone in the film Blood and Sand. Her performance in Alejandro Amenábar's film Tesis (Thesis) in 1996 earned her numerous awards and nominations. Towards the end of the 90s, Torrent played a Basque nationalist in Yoyes (2000), earning critical acclaim for her nuanced performance. In 2008, she worked with Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson in The Other Boleyn Girl. More recently, Torrent made a celebratory return to the Cannes Film Festival in 2023 with her role in the film Close Your Eyes directed by Victor Erice.
