What's After the Movie
André Luguet (15 May 1892 – 24 May 1979) was a prolific French stage and film actor whose career spanned six decades, beginning in the silent era and extending into the modern sound period. Born in the suburban town of Fontenay‑sous‑Bois, just outside Paris, he entered the theatrical world in 1910, quickly gaining a reputation for his elegant presence and versatile diction. Over the next sixty years he appeared in more than 120 films, ranging from early French melodramas such as Parisian Pleasures (1927) to American‑produced features like Paris Blues (1961), demonstrating an uncommon ability to adapt to different cinematic cultures. His performances often blended subtle humor with a dignified gravitas, qualities that made him a favorite of directors seeking a refined supporting actor. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s Luguet became a recognizable face in popular French cinema, delivering memorable turns in titles like The Man Who Played God (1932), The Rosary (1934), and The French, They Are a Funny Race (1955). He also collaborated with international productions, appearing in High Pressure (1932) and the adventure drama The Roots of Heaven (1958). In the later stage of his career he embraced television, most notably portraying Hugues de Bouville in the acclaimed series Les Rois maudits (1972). Off‑screen, André was the father of actress Rosine Luguet, ensuring that his artistic legacy continued through the next generation. He passed away in Cannes on 24 May 1979 at the age of 87, leaving behind a rich body of work that still serves as a reference point for scholars of French cinema and a treasure for classic film enthusiasts.
