What's After the Movie
**Andrew Lewis Prine** (February 14, 1936 – October 31, 2022) was an *American* film, stage, and television actor whose career spanned nearly six decades. Born in the small farming community of Jennings, Florida, Prine fled the rural landscape for the bustling theatres of New York City in the mid‑1950s, where he survived as a “starving” stage actor before landing his first television role on *United States Steel Hour* in 1957. That same year he debuted on Broadway as the lead in the adaptation of Thomas Wolfe’s *Look Homeward, Angel*, a production that ran for 564 performances and earned critical acclaim. Disillusioned by the modest earnings of the stage, he transitioned to screen work, quickly becoming a familiar face in westerns and dramas, notably as Andy Guthrie in the NBC series *Wide Country* (1962‑63) and as James Keller in the Academy‑Award‑nominated film *The Miracle Worker* (1962).
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s Prine cultivated a reputation as a versatile character actor, appearing in such television staples as *Gunsmoke*, *Bonanza*, *The Virginian*, and *The Fugitive*, while also starring in western films by Andrew V. McLaglen such as *The Devil’s Brigade* (1968) and *Chisum* (1970). He later embraced the horror genre, delivering memorable performances in cult classics like *The Town That Dreaded Sundown* (1976) and *Amityville II: The Possession* (1982). In the 1990s and 2000s he continued to work steadily, guest‑starring on series including *Star Trek: The Next Generation*, *CSI*, and *Six Feet Under*, and even collaborating with Quentin Tarantino on an Emmy‑winning *CSI* episode. Prine’s contributions to the western tradition were honored with a Golden Boot Award in 2001. He remained active in the industry until 2015, leaving behind a legacy of more than 300 screen credits before passing away of natural causes while vacationing in Paris at the age of 86.
