What's After the Movie
Anne Frances Murphy (born December 19, 1986) is a Canadian actress best known for her breakout role as Alexis Rose on the critically acclaimed sitcom Schitt's Creek (2015‑2020). Raised in Ottawa, Ontario, she grew up in a household of educators and attended the Elmwood School, where she first discovered a passion for stage performance. After a brief stint at Queen’s University, Murphy transferred to Concordia University, earning a degree in theatre performance before honing her craft at the Canadian Film Centre Actors' Conservatory. At age 22 she moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting, initially taking on small roles in Canadian productions such as Story of Jen (2008) and television series like Good God (2012). Her early career was marked by perseverance, as she once described herself as a “struggling actress” juggling drama parts while yearning for comedy. The turning point arrived in 2013 when she auditioned for and secured the role of Alexis Rose, a performance that earned her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, multiple Canadian Screen Award nominations, and a Golden Globe nod. Beyond Schitt's Creek, Murphy has expanded her repertoire with the dark comedy Kevin Can F**k Himself (2021‑2022), a recurring turn in the second season of Russian Doll (2022), an episode of Black Mirror titled “Joan Is Awful” (2023), and voice work as the villainous Chelsea Van Der Zee/Queen Nerissa in the animated feature Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken (2023). Her commercial work includes campaigns for Hudson’s Bay, HelloFresh, Nintendo Switch, and the sparkling water brand Sparkling Ice. Personal life: In August 2011, she married Canadian singer‑songwriter Menno Versteeg, frontman of Hollerado and Anyway Gang. The couple survived a 2013 house fire that destroyed most of their belongings, and Murphy continues to support charitable causes as an ambassador for Care Canada and a donor to Toronto’s Encampment Support Network.
