Arthur Hiller Penn (September 27, 1922 – September 28, 2010) was an American filmmaker, theatre director, and producer who won several awards for his works. He was a part of the New Hollywood movement during the late 1960s and 70s directing several critically-acclaimed films that dealt with countercultural issues. Notable films include The Chase (1966), Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Alice's Restaurant (1969), and Little Big Man (1970). Penn was recognized for his talents with a Tony Award win and three Academy Award nominations for Best Director, along with other distinguished accolades. He also ventured into television and stage production.
In the 1990s, Penn returned to stage and television direction, contributing notably to the crime series Law & Order. His early life spanned service as an infantryman in World War II (1943–1946) and a growing interest in theater and film that led him to the documentary Fully Awake. Known as a director of quality television dramas, Penn made his feature debut with The Left Handed Gun (1958). Penn's other notable films included Night Moves (1975) and The Missouri Breaks (1976). Penn's contributions to cinema were acknowledged throughout his career and even posthumously with numerous honorary awards.
