Basil Harry Hoffman, an American actor popular for his roles in film and television, had his career spread over five decades. His rich acting history, predominantly in supporting roles, included work with many award-winning directors like Alan Pakula and Robert Redford. Hoffman was not just an actor, but also an author, with two books about acting to his credit, namely 'Acting and How to Be Good at It'. Born in Houston, Texas in January 1938, he later honed his acting skills at the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. His time in New York saw him undertaking vast range of roles on stage, episodic television, and numerous commercials. His film debut was made alongside Sophia Loren in 'Lady Liberty', directed by Mario Monicelli.

Moving to Los Angeles in 1974, Hoffman continued acting in numerous television episodes, movies and commercials. He played memorable roles as the fingerprint technician on 'Ellery Queen' and as Principal Dingleman on 'Square Pegs'. Being a long-time private acting teacher and coach, he often taught at highly prestigious institutions, including the American Film Institute and the University of Southern California. His directorial expertise made him a U.S. State Department Cultural Envoy to Lebanon, where he taught acting and directing. Apart from his diverse acting and teaching career, Hoffman was also part of several organizational bodies in the field of arts, such as Screen Actors Guild and Loyola Marymount University.
