Bill Hayes

Bill Hayes (born William Hayes on June 5, 1925 in Harvey, Illinois) is an American actor and singer whose career spanned more than seven decades, making him one of the most enduring figures in television history. He first attracted public attention in the 1950s as a crooner with a smooth baritone, recording pop standards for RCA Victor and appearing on variety shows such as The Ed Sullivan Show and The Tonight Show. After serving in the United States Army during World War II, Hayes leveraged his vocal talent to land a starring role on the 1959 Broadway musical The Sound of Music before transitioning to television, where his charisma and strong screen presence earned him guest spots on popular series like Maverick and The Twilight Zone. In 1970, he was cast as Doug Williams, a charismatic singer‑turned‑musician who became a cornerstone of the daytime drama Days of Our Lives. Hayes’ portrayal of Doug, complete with his own musical performances woven into the storyline, resonated with audiences and helped the show achieve record‑breaking ratings, cementing his status as a soap‑opera legend. Over the next five decades he remained a fixture on the series, earning multiple Daytime Emmy nominations and receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 2015.
