Billy Mitchell

William Lendrum "Billy" Mitchell (1879‑12‑29 – 1936‑02‑19) was a visionary United States Army officer whose relentless advocacy shaped the future of American air power. Born in Nice, France to Senator John L. Mitchell and Harriet Danforth, he grew up on a Wisconsin estate and entered the Army as a private during the Spanish‑American War, quickly rising through the Signal Corps and serving in the Philippines. His early fascination with aviation began after witnessing Orville Wright’s demonstration in 1908, leading him to train at the Curtiss Flying School and later become a pivotal figure in the fledgling Aviation Section of the Signal Corps. During World War I Mitchell commanded all American air combat units in France, directing the massive air component of the Saint‑Mihiel offensive and earning the Distinguished Service Cross and Medal among other honors. After the war he championed an independent air force, arguing that strategic bombers could sink battleships and that air power would dominate future wars; his public bombing tests on captured German vessels, especially the sinking of the Ostfriesland, sparked national debate and forced the military to reconsider naval and ground‑air doctrines. Mitchell’s outspoken criticism of Army and Navy leadership culminated in a 1925 court‑martial for insubordination, where despite being found guilty he retained widespread public support and was later honored with a Congressional Gold Medal.
