Daniel Keenan Savage, known popularly as Dan Savage, is an acclaimed American author, media pundit, and journalist known for his work as an activist in the LGBT community. He is the force behind the internationally syndicated Savage Love, a relationship and sex advice column. In 2010, Savage and his husband, Terry Miller, initiated the It Gets Better Project with the aim of assisting in the prevention of suicide among LGBT youth. Raised in Chicago by Roman Catholic parents, Savage pursued his Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, specializing in acting, at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. After residing in West Berlin from 1988 to 1990, he relocated to Madison, Wisconsin. There, he met Tim Keck, co-founder of The Onion, who later appointed him as an advice columnist for The Stranger. Savage's career in The Stranger spawned a podcast of his column, Savage Lovecast, establishing him as a prominent advocate for LGBT rights in the United States. Savage Love, his column, and its podcast version, are his primary platforms for voicing his advocacy. Over the years, he has opposed laws restricting pornography and the sale sex toys. With controversies surrounding his work, Dan Savage has constantly been in discussions around the LGBT community and rights.
