David Acord

David Acord (born April 7, 1969) is an American sound editor and voice actor whose work has become integral to modern blockbuster cinema, especially within the Star Wars franchise. Growing up in Delaware, Acord developed an early fascination with sound design, eventually turning that passion into a professional career that began in 1996 and has continued unabated to the present day. He first gained widespread recognition as the supervising sound editor on Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), a role that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Sound Editing as well as a BAFTA nomination, both shared with fellow sound editor Matthew Wood. In addition to his behind‑the‑scenes contributions, Acord provided the distinctive voice of stormtrooper FN‑2199 (also known as TR‑8R) in the same film, a surprisingly minimal line that sparked a viral internet phenomenon and cemented his status among fans. His vocal talents extended to the animated series Star Wars Rebels, where he performed as an Imperial Male PA and two additional stormtroopers, and most notably to the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, where he supplied the iconic infant‑like sounds for Grogu, affectionately called “The Child.” Beyond the Star Wars universe, Acord’s résumé includes sound design and mixing work on a diverse slate of high‑profile projects such as Avengers: Age of Ultron, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Thor: The Dark World. He also contributed to major animated features like The Incredibles, Cars, and Ice Age: The Meltdown, showcasing his versatility across genres. In 2020 he received his second Oscar nomination for Best Sound Editing for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, again in partnership with Wood, reaffirming his reputation as one of the industry’s leading auditory architects. Acord continues to influence contemporary soundscapes through ongoing work in film, television, and video games, including the Disney Infinity title released in 2015, and remains a respected figure among peers for his technical expertise and creative ingenuity.
