What's After the Movie
Demi Patricia Singleton (born 27 February 2007) is an American actress, singer, dancer and musician who has quickly become one of the most noteworthy child talents in contemporary entertainment. Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, she is of mixed heritage with family roots in Honduras and Dominica, and moved to New York City at the age of three where she began intensive training in music, dance and acting under some of the city’s most respected teachers. By the age of three she was already studying classical ballet, and at four she started learning the cello, later attending a Brooklyn‑based music conservatory for six years where she mastered the Suzuki method and could play by ear. Her early exposure to performance continued when she attended a Broadway musical featuring child performers at nine, a moment that solidified her ambition to become a stage artist. Singleton’s professional career launched in 2017, and her Broadway debut came the following year when she was cast as the ten‑year‑old lead in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock, a role she inhabited for nearly a year before joining the cast of Disney’s The Lion King as young Nala. In September 2018 she entered television, portraying Margaret Johnson, the granddaughter of Forest Whitaker’s character in the Epix crime drama Godfather of Harlem. Her breakout film role arrived in 2020 when she was selected to embody a young Serena Williams in King Richard, a performance that earned critical praise and introduced her to a global audience. She also appeared as the same young Serena in a high‑profile Bumble Super Bowl commercial in 2019. Most recently she has taken on the part of Sally Reeves in Paramount+’s western series Lawmen: Bass Reeves and continues to expand her repertoire across stage, screen and music. Alongside her acting pursuits, Singleton graduated from Marlborough School in Los Angeles in May 2025 and has begun undergraduate studies at Yale University, balancing a demanding academic program with a flourishing entertainment career.
