Edwin August

Edwin August, born Edwin August Phillip von der Butz on November 10, 1883 in St. Louis, Missouri, emerged as a prolific figure of the American silent era whose career spanned both stage and screen. After graduating from Christian Brothers College, he cut his theatrical teeth as a leading man at the Imperial Theater in his hometown before moving to New York, where he appeared on Broadway in the 1910 production of Mr. and Mrs. Daventry. By 1909 he had entered the nascent motion‑picture industry, quickly becoming one of its most industrious performers and appearing in more than 150 films over a thirty‑eight‑year period. His screen presence ranged from heroic historical roles, such as John Paul Jones in The Stars and Stripes, to everyday characters in countless short dramas that defined early cinema. In addition to acting, August displayed a remarkable talent for behind‑the‑scenes work, directing 52 films between 1912 and 1919 and co‑founding the short‑lived Eaco Films in 1914, an enterprise that reflected his entrepreneurial spirit. He also contributed as a screenwriter, penning stories that were brought to life by his own direction, and even authored novels under the pen name Montague Lawrence, showcasing his versatility as a storyteller. Throughout the 1910s and 1920s, August's name appeared in credits for popular titles such as The Yellow Passport and The Lion's Claws, while his later years saw him transition to smaller, often uncredited parts in major studio productions like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and The Magnificent Ambersons. Despite the shift to talkies, he continued to work sporadically until 1947, demonstrating a lifelong dedication to his craft. Edwin August passed away on March 4, 1964 in Hollywood, California, and was laid to rest at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in North Hollywood, leaving behind a legacy that encapsulates the formative years of American cinema.
