Frances Louise Fisher, born May 11, 1952, began her career in theater before making her mark in television and film. Performing in various regional and off-Broadway productions, Fisher honed her skills at the Actors Studio, under the tutelage of Lee Strasberg. Her initial breakout role came in the form of Detective Deborah Saxon in the CBS daytime soap opera The Edge of Night (1976–1981). On the big screen, she is known for her roles in several significant films, including Unforgiven (1992), Titanic (1997), True Crime (1999), House of Sand and Fog (2003), Laws of Attraction (2004), The Kingdom (2007), In the Valley of Elah (2007), Jolene (2008), The Lincoln Lawyer (2011), and The Host (2013). From 2014 to 2015, Fisher starred in the ABC drama series Resurrection. In 2019, she landed a role in the HBO television series Watchmen, a sequel to the titular graphic novel.
Fisher's early life saw her moving frequently due to her father's job which led her to live in countries like Italy, France, Canada, and Brazil. After the death of her mother when she was 15, Fisher took on the responsibility of raising her younger brother. In addition to her acting success, Fisher is also known for her political activities. Fisher is a self-described progressive Democrat and has been an active supporter of various election campaigns over the years. She is also an established member of SAG-AFTRA, Los Angeles Chapter and has served on the National Board of Directors since 2004.
