What's After the Movie
Herbert Banemann Rawlinson (15 November 1885 – 12 July 1953) was an English‑born actor whose career spanned the golden ages of silent cinema, the early sound era, and even the nascent days of television and radio. Born in New Brighton, Cheshire, England, he was one of seven children of Robert Theodore Rawlinson and Emily Rawlinson, and he spent his formative years absorbing the theatrical traditions of his homeland before embarking on a transatlantic journey that would change the course of his professional life. He sailed to the United States on the same vessel as Charlie Chaplin, a coincidence that foreshadowed his eventual rise as a leading man in Hollywood’s silent film industry. Between 1911 and the late 1920s Rawlinson appeared in dozens of productions, commanding the screen with a dignified bearing and a clear, resonant voice that later eased his transition into the “talkies,” where he shifted from heroic leads to nuanced character parts. Despite the rapid technological changes that toppled many of his peers, Rawlinson maintained a steady presence on screen and stage. He embraced the emerging mediums of radio and early television, demonstrating a versatility that kept him employed until his final film appearance in Ed Wood’s Jail Bait (released posthumously in 1954). His contributions to cinema were recognized long after his death when a star was placed in his honor on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6150 Hollywood Boulevard on 8 February 1960. Off‑camera, Rawlinson experienced a complex personal life, marrying three times—first to actress Roberta Arnold (1917‑1923), then to Loraine Abigail Long (1924‑1927), and finally to Josephine Norman, who predeceased him in 1951. He died of lung cancer at the age of 67, leaving behind a legacy of over forty films that illustrate the evolution of American popular entertainment from silent melodrama to mid‑century genre pictures.
