What's After the Movie
Hidetoshi Nishijima (西島 秀俊) is a renowned Japanese actor and model whose career spans over three decades, beginning with his television debut in the detective series Hagure Keiji Junjōha in 1992. Born on March 29, 1971 in Hachiōji, Tokyo, he cultivated an early fascination with cinema under the influence of his father, initially aspiring to work behind the camera before an unexpected audition redirected his path to acting. His breakout came in 1993 when he portrayed a gay character in the popular drama Asunaro Hakusho, a role that highlighted his subtle performance style and earned him widespread recognition. After establishing himself on television, Nishijima shifted focus to film, delivering his first leading performance in Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s License to Live (1998), which garnered him the Best Actor award at the Japan Film Professional Awards. The 2002 film Dolls, directed by Takeshi Kitano, served as a pivotal moment that cemented his reputation as a versatile film actor capable of handling complex, emotionally charged roles. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, he balanced both media, starring in acclaimed TV series such as General Rouge no Gaisen, Strawberry Night, and What Did You Eat Yesterday?, while also appearing in notable films like The Wind Rises (voice role), Vacation, and Samurai’s Promise. His international breakthrough arrived with Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car (2021), earning him the Japan Academy Film Prize for Best Actor and critical praise from The New York Times as one of the “Best Actors of 2021.” In addition to acting, Nishijima made history in fashion by becoming the first Japanese man to model for Giorgio Armani’s Made‑to‑Measure line in 2017, and in 2022 he was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, underscoring his impact on both Japanese and global entertainment industries.
