What's After the Movie
Humphrey DeForest Bogart, often referred to simply as Bogie, was an iconic American actor. He is most remembered for his performances in classic Hollywood cinema films such as The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, and The Big Sleep, which have made him an American cultural icon. From his humble beginnings in Broadway shows, Bogart made his way into film, diligently honing his craft in supporting roles and eventually gaining acclaim for his work in The Petrified Forest and Dead End. His breakthrough came in High Sierra, and his performance in The Maltese Falcon catapulted him to stardom, establishing him as a leading man in the noir film genre. He reprised his role as the cynical yet honorable detective in several other films, and also played the war hero in Dead Reckoning. His first romantic lead role was the memorable Rick Blaine in Casablanca, for which he received an Academy Award nomination. Further success followed with The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, In a Lonely Place, and The Caine Mutiny. Bogart won an Academy Award for his role in The African Queen, capping a career marked with numerous significant roles.
Despite his on-screen successes, Bogart contended with several challenges in his personal life. He was married to four different actresses before marrying Lauren Bacall in 1945. The two had appeared together in several films and their relationship was a staple in Hollywood gossip columns. Their marriage produced two children and lasted until Bogart's death in 1957 from esophageal cancer.
