Jan Merlin

Jan Merlin (born Jan Wasylewski on April 3, 1925 in New York City) was an American character actor, television writer and author noted for his towering presence and frequent casting as the heavy in mid‑century genre productions. Raised in a Polish‑American family, he attended the Grace Church School for Boys and the prestigious Stuyvesant High School before dropping out to serve as a torpedoman in the United States Navy during World War II, an experience that later informed many of his gritty screen roles. After the war he entered summer stock theatre in 1946 and earned a scholarship to the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, where he refined his craft and made his Broadway debut in the 1949 hit Mister Roberts alongside Henry Fonda. From that point his professional career extended from the late 1940s through 1992, encompassing more than thirty feature films, dozens of television episodes and countless radio dramas. He became recognizable to television audiences as Cadet Roger Manning in Tom Corbett, Space Cadet (1950‑53) and as Lieutenant Cullen Kirby in The Rough Riders (1959), and later made memorable guest appearances on series such as Perry Mason, Bonanza, The Tall Man and Irwin Allen’s sci‑fi favorites The Time Tunnel and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. In film he appeared in westerns like A Day of Fury (1956) and Hell Bent for Leather (1960), as well as in noir‑ish productions such as The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre (1967) and the cult adventure The Hindenburg (1975). Though often cast as a villain whose on‑screen life ended quickly, his performances were praised for a subtle mixture of menace and vulnerability. Merlin earned a Daytime Emmy Award in 1975 for Outstanding Writing on the soap opera Another World and was nominated again the following year, reflecting his talent behind the camera as well as in front of it. Beginning in 1982 he published a series of novels, including Gunbearer and Ainoko, and later co‑authored non‑fiction works about Hollywood history. He received the Golden Halo Award from the Southern California Motion Picture Council in 2009 for his lifelong contributions to the industry. Married first to Patricia Ann Datz (1951‑1986) with whom he had one son, Peter William, he later wed Barbara Doyle in 1988; both marriages lasted until the respective deaths of his spouses. Jan Merlin passed away in Los Angeles on September 20, 2019 at the age of 94, leaving behind a rich legacy of versatile performances and written works that continue to be celebrated by genre enthusiasts.
