Jane Birkin

Jane Mallory Birkin OBE was a widely respected British-French actress and singer who lived from 1946 to 2023. Born in London, she launched her career as an actress with minor roles in Michelangelo Antonioni's 'Blowup' (1966), and 'Kaleidoscope' (1966). She met Serge Gainsbourg on the set of 'Slogan' in 1968, initiating a lengthy professional and personal relationship with him. Their debut album, 'Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg,' was released in 1969, and Birkin starred in the movie 'Je t'aime moi non plus' under Gainsbourg's direction in 1976. Although she primarily worked in France, she occasionally ventured into English-language films such as the Agatha Christie adaptations 'Death on the Nile' (1978) and 'Evil Under the Sun' (1982), as well as James Ivory's 'A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries' (1998).

After parting ways with Gainsbourg in 1980, Birkin remained active in both acting and music, taking on various independent film roles and recording several solo albums. In 2016, she played the lead role in the Academy Award-nominated short film 'La femme et le TGV,' which she declared to be her final film role. With her first husband John Barry, she gave birth to Kate Barry; with Serge Gainsbourg she had Charlotte Gainsbourg; and with Jacques Doillon, she had musician Lou Doillon. Her name is also associated with the iconic Hermès Birkin handbag.
