Jennifer Butler

Jennifer Ruth Butler (born April 21, 1981 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American former basketball center whose career is noted for breaking new ground for the University of Massachusetts Amherst's women's program. Growing up in the vibrant neighborhoods of Brooklyn, Butler developed a passion for basketball on the courts of local community centers before earning a scholarship to Murry Bergtraum High School, a school renowned for producing elite basketball talent. At Bergtraum she quickly distinguished herself as a dominant post player, leading her team to multiple city championships and attracting the attention of collegiate scouts nationwide. In 1999 she committed to the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she majored while becoming a staple in the Minutewomen's lineup for four seasons. During her tenure, Butler's relentless rebounding and interior defense propelled the team to several Atlantic 10 tournament appearances, and in her senior year she captured the NCAA season rebounding leader title in 2003, averaging an impressive double‑digit rebound total per game. Her statistical dominance earned her a place in the Atlantic 10 Conference legends class of 2015, cementing her legacy within the conference. The culmination of her collegiate success arrived when the Cleveland Rockers selected her in the second round of the 2003 WNBA draft, making Butler the first UMass alumna ever drafted by a WNBA franchise.
