**Joaquin Garay** (born *November 15, 1911* in El Oro, Mexico) arrived in the United States when he was barely eleven months old, a fact that would shape a uniquely bicultural career. He rose to prominence in the 1940s as a charismatic radio performer, captivating audiences with his smooth baritone and natural comedic timing. In September 1941 he opened the famed Copacabana nightclub, a hotspot that attracted Hollywood glitterati and offered a stage for his vaudeville sketches, live singing, and occasional hosting duties. His 1944 album *A Night at Joaquin Garay’s Copacabana* showcased his versatility, blending Mexican folk influences with the big‑band sound popular in wartime America. Though technically Mexican by birth, Garay’s accent had been American‑inflected for so long that Disney’s auditory specialists felt his spoken Mexican dialogue in *The Three Caballeros* sounded artificial, prompting the hiring of Felipe Turich as a vocal coach for the Mexican Spanish dub.
