John Cassavetes

John Nicholas Cassavetes (December 9, 1929 – February 3, 1989) was a significant figure in American cinema, known for pioneering the independent film movement. Starting his career as an actor in film and television, Cassavetes later made his mark as a gifted writer and director, often self-funding, producing, and distributing his own projects. His exceptional work led to nominations for three Academy Awards, two BAFTA Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, and an Emmy Award. He played a pivotal role in NBC detective series Johnny Staccato and was seen in notable films such as _Edge of the City_, _The Dirty Dozen_, _Rosemary's Baby_, and _Mikey and Nicky_. His distinctive directorial works include _Shadows_, _Faces_, _Husbands_, _A Woman Under the Influence_, _Opening Night_, and _Love Streams_. His films, known for their improvisational aesthetic and cinéma vérité feel, centered on raw character relationships and 'small feelings', rejecting conventional Hollywood storytelling and stylization. Cassavetes often worked alongside his wife, American actress Gena Rowlands, and friends Peter Falk, Ben Gazzara, and Seymour Cassel. A lifetime dedicated to acting and filmmaking saw him and Rowlands' children, Nick, Alexandra, and Zoe, tread a similar path.
