John Kerry

John Kerry was born on December 11, 1943. He began his political career serving as the Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts from 1983 to 1985, and as a United States Senator from Massachusetts from 1985 to 2013. Kerry was known for his leadership in foreign policy and was appointed by President Obama as the 68th United States Secretary of State, during which he served from 2013 - 2017. One of Kerry's significant contributions during his time in office was his successful negotiation of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran's nuclear program, as well as the Paris Agreement on climate change. He played significant roles as Congressional chairmanships including Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 2009 - 2013. Active military service was another facet of Kerry's life. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, earning multiple decorations for his service, including a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts. Kerry remained a political and diplomatic figure after his term as Secretary of State. In 2020, he was appointed by President Joe Biden as the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate.
