What's After the Movie
Joyce Barbour (27 March 1901 – 16 March 1977) was an English film and stage actress whose career spanned five decades, marked by versatility and a pioneering spirit. Born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, she was the daughter of Horace Barbour, an assurance clerk turned hotel manager, and Miriam Barbour, and displayed an early talent for performance, appearing as a pantomime fairy in her hometown at the age of thirteen. Her first London appearance came just a year later, when she joined the chorus of the Gaiety Theatre in 1915, launching a lifelong association with the capital’s theatrical world. Throughout the 1920s she honed her craft in both Britain and the United States, debuting on Broadway in August 1924 as Violet Dering in 'Havoc' and later as Florence Horridge in 'Sky‑High'. Barbour’s Broadway résumé grew with original productions of Rodgers and Hart’s 'Present Arms' (1928) and 'Spring is Here' (1929), while back in London she starred in the West End musical 'Ever Green' (1930) and Noël Coward’s 'Words and Music' (1932) at the Adelphi Theatre. In the post‑war era she took over the iconic role of Madame Arcati in Coward’s 'Blithe Spirit' (1945) and succeeded Margaret Rutherford as Miss Whitchurch in 'The Happiest Days of Your Life' (1949), demonstrating her comedic timing and stage presence. Her film work, though less extensive than her stage career, includes memorable turns such as Sophie Desmond in 'Enchantment' (1920), Renee in Alfred Hitchcock’s 'Sabotage' (1936), and Lady Burridge in 'It Started in Paradise' (1952). Barbour married fellow actor Richard Bird in 1931, and the couple remained a noted theatrical partnership until her death in Northwood, Middlesex, in 1977 at the age of 75. Her legacy endures through the breadth of her performances, which exemplify the evolution of British theatre and cinema throughout the twentieth century.
