What's After the Movie
Lucy Marrow, born Lucy Ann McAleer on November 20, 1932 in Los Angeles, California, emerged from a theatrical family with uncles who were prominent in Los Angeles civic life and professional baseball. She grew up hearing stories of her uncle Owen McAleer, a former mayor, and Uncle Jimmy McAleer, a baseball manager, which sparked her early fascination with performance and public attention. After graduating from Los Angeles High School, where she starred in productions such as Peg o' My Heart and Gramercy Ghost, she pursued drama studies at the University of Arizona, joining the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and participating in both the theatre program and the school band. Marlow honed her craft at the Pasadena Playhouse, appearing in the comedy Lo and Behold and the acclaimed Gown and Glory, performances that led to a screen test and her eventual casting in the title role of Jane Eyre at the Ricardo Montalbán Theatre. Her film debut arrived in 1954 with a small part in Lucky Me, followed quickly by an appearance in the classic A Star Is Born. The following year she co‑starred as Marge Stevenson in Bring Your Smile Along and secured her best‑known role as Helen in My Sister Eileen, while also featuring in Queen Bee and headlining the 1956 comedy He Laughed Last. Transitioning to television, Marlow guest‑starred on popular series such as Gunsmoke (as Lucy Marlowe), Shotgun Slade, Peter Gunn, Overland Trail and Tales of Wells Fargo, showcasing her versatility across genres. In her personal life, she married professional baseball third‑baseman Andy Carey in a ceremony at the Hollywood United Methodist Church on October 6, 1955; the couple welcomed a son in 1956 and later a daughter, bringing their family to two children. After retiring from acting in the mid‑1970s, Marlow lived quietly in California until her death in Beaumont on December 18, 2018, leaving behind a modest but memorable legacy of mid‑century film and television work.
