Ramón Gerard Antonio Estévez known professionally as Martin Sheen, is an American actor who has been in the acting industry for six decades. The Emmy Award winner was born on August 3, 1940, and his illustrious career has numerous accolades including three Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and four Screen Actors Guild Awards. He rose to prominence in his breakthrough roles in Terrence Malick's crime drama Badlands (1973) and Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam War drama Apocalypse Now (1979). He is also known for notable films like The Subject Was Roses (1968), Catch-22 (1970), and The California Kid (1974), just to name a few. In addition to film, Sheen portrayed President Jed Bartlet in The West Wing where he received six Emmy nominations. He also played Robert Hanson in the Netflix series Grace and Frankie (2015–2022). His career is characterized by notable performances and social advocacy. Sheen was born to immigrant parents in Dayton, Ohio and adopted the stage name Martin Sheen to help him gain acting parts. He is the father of four children, all of whom are also actors. He has directed, narrated, and produced film projects and continues to be active in liberal politics.
