Patricio Guzmán Lozanes, born August 11, 1941, is an eminent Chilean documentary film director known for his invaluable contributions to the world of filmmaking. Guzmán is famed for his trilogy, The Battle of Chile (1975–1979), which remains a significant work within his expansive portfolio. His dedication to his craft persisted as he went on to create another riveting trilogy; Nostalgia for the Light (2010), The Pearl Button (2015), and The Cordillera of Dreams (2019).
Not only is Guzmán an acclaimed director, but he also wears the hats of screenwriter, cinematographer, and actor. He embarked on his illustrious career in 1964 and continues to be active. Apart from filmmaking, Guzmán also imparts his wisdom and experience by teaching documentary film classes in Europe and Latin America. He is the founder and director of the International Documentary Festival of Santiago (FIDOCS). Many of his films have gained international recognition, such as The Compass Rose, which was entered into the 13th Moscow International Film Festival, while his film The Pearl Button found place in the main competition section of the 65th Berlin International Film Festival. For his film Nostalgia for the Light, he received a nomination for the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Documentary Screenplay.
